One, two, three, everyone say it with me: TRAP GAME!
Not that it will ultimately matter but Duke got the better end of the schedule with the home game on Saturday prior to CBA08 while UNC got the road game at FSU on Sunday. Anyway, we are looking at one of those games where we hope like mad the effort seen in the previous game is the start of something beautiful. It is also one of those games that requires the fairly high level of focus from the Heels who could easily be lulled into tough game they can ill afford to play three days ahead of Duke.
The most impressive portion of the game against BC was how the players responded. The five players that came in to make Roy’s point responded by extending the lead and the five who received the tongue lashing responded when they returned to play some of the best defense of the season. The question is how they respond to playing at such a high level? Has the defensive intensity finally clicked in? Was the defensive effort against BC enough to inspire the Heels to the confidence level they need play like that more consistently?
It remains to be seen but I consider FSU a good test. The Noles can be physical and have some decent guard play, enough so to test the perimeter defense. Then again I do not expect FSU to have enough to stop UNC’s offense but ahead of the Duke game it would be nice to see UNC string together back-to-back solid games on both ends of the court.
UNC 95 FSU 77

Anybody remember the FSU game where we came back from being down 20? I was in high school and I remember that everybody in my house was asleep (they’re all dookies) and I was going nuts but trying knock to wake anybody up. When George Lynch made the steal and dunk to complete the comeback, I couldn’t contain it anymore and went nuts. Everyone was ticked off, but I couldn’t have cared less.
Good times.

Yeah I remember it and I recall when Dean called a timeout with about 10 mins left Daddy saying that if they were going to attempt a comeback it was going to start then. He was right.

My Honey and I are leaving for Tallassee early this AM. She was a darling and bought the tickets for Christmas. Great seats! We are old and gray but WILL NOT be leaving early! This is our first live game in years and are SO excited! Hoping for a BIG, FAT W!

Ed, I remember it well. I was also in high school and was po’d when F$U was up by 20 on us…….at home nonetheless. I was about ready to turn the game off, and my dad (who was watching the game with tme) said I might want to reconsider. He said there was no way the Seminoles could hold the lead. He was right.
Man, I hope we crush F$U today and do the same to Duke on Wednesday.
February 3, 2008 at 12:13 pm |
Ed, you come from a dookie house? Me too. Glad to see you on the light side.
February 3, 2008 at 12:59 pm |
Andy,
Interesting that our fathers knew the could comeback. I know my father watched UNC for many years and probably had seen that situation before.

I’m glad Lawson is not going to try and play today. A win here is not worth sacrificing the rest of the season.
February 3, 2008 at 3:08 pm |
Well yes and no. As far as seeding in the NCAAs goes, the committee will essentially cancel this loss out should it occur based on the injury. On the other hand you really want to win this one. My lament here outside the obvious injury to Lawson is the fact this game will be 10 times tougher than it needs to be. Looking at a 31-29 halftime lead you can see with Lawson that could easily be a 12-14 point deficit. Also, Lawson was playing some freaking good basketball through five mins of this one and the past two games. I hate to see a hot hand end on the bench with an injury. At this point everything is out the window. Do your best to survive since I think UNC is still better than FSU without Lawson.
February 3, 2008 at 3:12 pm |
I realize he wasn’t trying to hurt Lawson, but the Noles displayed some attitude and really got after it even after Ty went out. Is it just me, or does anyone else sense this team needs to figure out how to use stuff like this as a motivator…ie–get MAD!
February 3, 2008 at 3:13 pm |
Agreed. Never meant to imply that I “wanted” to lose, I just want a win without Lawson playing.
And I want to have and eat my cake!!
Go Giants!
February 3, 2008 at 4:02 pm |
Consistency on the offensive end has been spotty, but Q has done a reasonable job playing the ## of minutes he is today. On the defensive side, FSU gets to the rack with an ease that is troublesome. though FSU just nailed a big 3
February 3, 2008 at 4:05 pm |
We are not finishing well.
February 3, 2008 at 4:07 pm |
Just pathetic!
February 3, 2008 at 4:07 pm |
agreed
February 3, 2008 at 4:09 pm |
I have seen high school squads show more savvy at the end of a game.
February 3, 2008 at 4:09 pm |
makes you wonder what will happen at the end of a close game come NCCA tourney time….not even a shot with 8 seconds
February 3, 2008 at 4:11 pm |
What has happened to Green and Ginyard?
February 3, 2008 at 4:13 pm |
Ginyard has turf-toe—you can see it really affecting him. Green?
February 3, 2008 at 4:13 pm |
I love hearing the drunk, hoarse college students in the background of the radio feed.
February 3, 2008 at 4:14 pm |
there ya go
February 3, 2008 at 4:14 pm |
Finally Green!
February 3, 2008 at 4:15 pm |
Finally Danny!
February 3, 2008 at 4:16 pm |
Tyler!
February 3, 2008 at 4:16 pm |
good stop–best of the game.
February 3, 2008 at 4:21 pm |
Sweet!
February 3, 2008 at 4:23 pm |
We’ve got it.
February 3, 2008 at 4:23 pm |
I still think we are better with Lawson at the point.
February 3, 2008 at 4:24 pm |
Why is Ginyard fouling with 20 seconds to go?
February 3, 2008 at 4:26 pm |
consistency?
February 3, 2008 at 4:26 pm |
Thanks to overtime, we are about going to keep up with our scoring average.
February 3, 2008 at 4:27 pm |
bullet dodged
February 3, 2008 at 4:28 pm |
Great, albeit ugly, win.
February 3, 2008 at 4:28 pm |
They sure looked a lot better in overtime than they did in the last four minutes. Maybe Roy wanted the extra practice!
February 3, 2008 at 4:31 pm |
QQQQQ!!!
February 3, 2008 at 4:34 pm |
Aside from the turnovers, Danny Green is back in form.
Dare I say it:
Are we facing Duke on Wednesday without Ty Lawson?
February 3, 2008 at 4:34 pm |
Q looked pretty average during the final two minutes of regulation.
February 3, 2008 at 4:37 pm |
Playing without Ty, that’s a great win.
If the stats I saw were correct Psycho T had 22 pts. & 21 boards. Not bad.
And, of course, QQQQQQ!
February 3, 2008 at 4:37 pm |
Q gave no help on a post-up on Tylers man, early in 2nd half. For any who were touting Graves, he’s a major defensive liability. I’ve heard Roy say it–this team has major concentration issues.
February 3, 2008 at 4:37 pm |
I’ll take average over suck.
February 3, 2008 at 4:52 pm |
at end of the day, it all counts the same; another in the W column. Ugly as it was, let’s take it & move onward to the showdown on Wednesday night. Hope Lawson will play; even some minutes will be better than none.
February 3, 2008 at 5:22 pm |
Yup, Q did me proud for 38 minutes of regulation, and then fell apart a little in the last 2 minutes. A turnover and an out of control layup when we needed to milk the come up big somewhere down the road.
February 3, 2008 at 7:12 pm |
Why was Roy wearing his basketball shoes during the game today?
February 3, 2008 at 7:43 pm |
Any way to find out Lawson’s condition or probability for Wed. night?
February 3, 2008 at 7:44 pm |
Hey Tarheel blue, I would like to see Roy show up in athletic gear some game.
February 3, 2008 at 7:45 pm |
If Coach K can “keep it real” as the youngsters like to say by calling Henderson “G”, I don’t see why Roy Williams can’t be “bout it bout it” by wearing athletic gear to a game.
February 3, 2008 at 7:59 pm |
coaches vs cancer weekend…most coaches were sporting tennis shoes over the weekend
February 3, 2008 at 8:40 pm |
THF, does anyone know what Lawson’s probability for the Duke game is? Does anyone know what Roy Williams’ post game comments were regarding it?
Thanks!
February 3, 2008 at 10:31 pm |
won’t know until after practice Tuesday is what he said.
in other news, Fins pop the champagne–WOO-HOO!
