I know, I know. Which one?
There is a buzz about the Inside Carolina message boards that Doug Gottlieb was heard to have said yesterday on his radio show that Ty Lawson’s injury was “bad karma” because Roy Williams turned down an interview request from him following his comments that Danny Green’s dancing routine prior to UNC home games was a distraction and showed a lack of class. Several posters over there emailed ESPN to complain and at least one person got a response from Gottlieb:
Jon,
It was said in jest…in response to UNC not wanting to come on radio…it was not personal and if Ty was really badly hurt…ACL, broken ankle, whatever, I would not have said it. I guess my biggest disappointment is that Coach Williams would not come on radio and then ask me about my Danny Green comments…anyway, I like Ty, I think he is 21 by the way and I hope he recovers soon.
We are a company of 3k or so employees, to pick apart the faults of the few is utterly unfair unless you give respect to the many.
Regards.
Doug
So to parse Gottlieb’s response, he basically justifies the remark by claiming it was a joke and based on the fact Lawson’s injury was not the season ending type. To Gottlieb I was would say joke or not, it was a fairly classless and stupid thing to say. UNC’s season hinges on whether Lawson is healthy or not and saying it was some kind of bad karma, even “in jest” is still a poor decision on his part and he should at least issue an apology.

What does, “I think he is 21 by the way” mean? Just trying to get another jab in? This guy is a horrid analyst.

Doug Gottlieb has his own past issues with honesty…what an idiot…

don’t miss the part about him stealing his roommates credit card…

Wilson,
I can only assume the poster who emailed made reference to Lawson’s age as probably being 19 or 20 and Gottlieb was correcting him as though that mattered.

It doesn’t matter if Ty only had a concussion – there is no way that he should be suggesting that somehow Ty’s health has anything to do with what Roy does or does not do. What, has a coach never refused to do an interview with him before because he was a jerk? Maybe he should act like a professional – and an adult.

Who the ____ is Doug Gottlieb and why does anyone think he’s relevant in the first place?

hmmm… to quote the (cough, cough) esteemed Mr. Gottlieb: “We are a company of 3k or so employees, to pick apart the faults of the few is utterly unfair unless you give respect to the many.” Let me gladly say that I will give much respect to the following analysts: Jay Bilas, Digger Phelps, Hubert Davis, and yes, even good ol’ Dickie V (he would NEVER wish ill-will on any player). And that’s just for college basketball. No need to mention other sports here, as I’m sure part of Gottlieb’s 3K comment included part of the ESPN universe not associated with men’s college basketball.
That said, I think it’s totally fair for anyone and everyone to criticize Gottlieb for that comment. When someone makes the decision to wear two professional hats (television analyst and radio-show host), that person has to realize that they are walking on thin ice.
DISCLAIMER – I have never listened to Gottlieb’s show, so I don’t know a thing about it – DISCLAIMER END.
From my perspective, the entire point of a sports radio show is to stir the pot – get people’s juices flowing to tune in and pay attention. If Gottlieb wants to play that game, that’s fine – we’ll group him in with Rome, Cowherd, and the rest of that lot.
If he wants to be known as an intelligent, thoughtful analyst, he might want to consider dropping his radio gig and focus on objectively analyzing what he sees. It would also help to stop the whining because he can’t get A-list talent on hid D-List show.

Can anyone name the last time Doug Gottlieb said anything positive about UNC. He absolutely hates the Heels and constantly seeks ways to criticize them for anything. I, for one, don’t even listen to him talk anymore.

If Wikipedia is correct, Ty turned 20 less than three months ago.
Of course, Ty’s age is a moronic and irrelevent subject to bring up in an idiotic discussion by a less than objective dolt who maybe makes even Stephen A. Smith look good. (Is that a sentence? If not, I apologize.)

I do think Gottlieb is an idiot in general, but come on guys this is sports not life or death, lighten up a little.

I recall this douche shooting like 49% from the line when he played for the classy Eddie Sutton at OSU after being kicked out of Neutered Dame. lol. credit card theft. I guess anyone can get a job at ESPN!?
