Via Mr Irrelevant is this photo of the extended Vitale family in attendance at the Duke-Maryland game last night.
Now, on one hand, Vitale probably did not tell his sons to come to the game with his grandchildren decked out in Duke gear. Perhaps his sons are Duke fans and this is no different than any other family. On the other hand, it makes Vitale look like even more of a Duke homer than he already does(if that is possible.)
Update: According to commenter C.Michael his family dons the home colors if they are with him. So perhaps he is being less Duke homerish(is that a word?) than we might all think. And I would argue for journalistic integrity but please, we all know Vitale is no journalist in the same way Kirk Herbstreit is not one either.
Now, Mike Patrick on the other hand….

To Vitale’s defense, he did say that he feels UNC is still the best team in the conference when we have Ty. Just sayin’…

I’m sorry, but this is proof once and for all the ESPN should be banned from carrying ACC games. We’ve known for several years now that they have no objectivity when it comes to dook, but this is the last straw. When you can’t even at least pretend to be objective, you’re no longer fit to present yourself as a sporting news entity and you should of the right to broadcast games until you can fix that problem.

ESPN loves Duke. ESPN loves Carolina. ESPN especially loves that we get so worked up over who ESPN loves.

Nice.
Now if his grandkids show up at a Carolina game with UNC gear on, then I will give him a pass. I doubt that will happen though.

Vitale is on record as saying when his family attends a game, they always wear the home teams colors. This is a non-issue.

I agree Michael–such “contrived indignation” makes UNC fans appear petty, and not a little like some other un-named fan base(es). It should be sufficient to detest Vitale for his cheesy schtik.

Every other team in the nation, except Carolina and Duke, has reason to complain. Carolina has ZERO reason, I repeat ZERO reason to complain about its coverage either from Dick Vitale or ESPN.

Can’t we just agree that Vitale’s grandsons are losers and leave it at that?

I agree that UNC fans shouldn’t complain. So many of our games are on ESPN networks and Dick loves us, he just loves Duke a little more. I think he could tone down that love occasionally. You shouldn’t think of him as a journalist, because he isn’t. That’s why he can’t make it into the HOF. Witness him calling out the Indiana AD when anyone that does a small amount of digging knows the AD got overruled by the IU President on the Sampson hiring after they fired Mike Davis.
