Three future Heels show their wares.
Tyler Zeller, Ed Davis and Larry Drew had good outings during the McDonalds High School All American game Wednesday night as the East won 107-102 over the West. Here are my impressions of the three soon to be UNC freshman:
Tyler Zeller, 6 points
Zeller runs the court well, appears to have excellent skills as a shooter and should fit nicely into the Roy Williams fast break offense. Since they do not play much defense in this game it is hard to say much about that but Zeller does need to put on weight and muscle so he can assert himself more on the boards.
Ed Davis, 11 points
Davis probably had the best game of the three from the parts I watched. He did a great job grabbing rebounds on the offensive glass and looks like a very good athlete. It will be interesting to see where he fits in if Tyler Hansbrough returns and UNC already having Deon Thompson and Alex Stepheson. There is a chance you will see UNC go bigger, especially if Davis and Zeller can run the floor.
Larry Drew, 7 points
I actually think Drew might be the most important recruit of the three if Ty Lawson goes to the NBA. Of course if Hansbrough also goes to the NBA then the other two more much more important but if Lawson leaves you will have Bobby Frasor starting at point and Larry Drew as his backup. Drew showed the ability to hit some threes and based on what I have read he is a smart player who can run the offense. That is to say he is more Frasor than Lawson but that in itself may not really be an issue.
At any rate, if the NBA defections are limited to Lawson then UNC will come back with a very deep team and only a downgrade at point guard. Assuming Frasor and Drew can be as good as Quentin Thomas was during Lawson’s injury, that step down is not really that far.

I thought we had twin towers coming in. What year are they slated to arrive?

2009 with 6-10 John Henson who can play like a guard and Dexter Strickland a top flight PG.

THF,
Last night Gottleib and Tom Brennan were saying that it is what pretty much a done deal that Hansbrough, Lawson and Ellington were leaving.
Is this true?
I’ve heard rumors about Lawson and heard that Hansbrough was a possibility, but last night was the first time I had heard anything about Ellington.

Do you know their names? How about the consensus ranking for the next two classes? I think I saw that Wake is rated slightly higher than we are for next year’s class, so Wake could be pretty good again.

As much as I come to this site, I never noticed that before. Your headlines must be too good as they draw my eyes away from other things.

THF, did you notice how Ed Davis carries his shoulders? He’s kind of slouchy. He looks like he is scared someone is going to take the ball away from him. I suspect he will be a foul prone player like Brendan Haywood was, just based on the way both of them carry their bodies. I thought Haywood got cheap fouls called on him just for being his size and people bouncing off of him. Ed Davis fits that bill too. He chases after rebounds a little like Hansbrough does. It was nice to see that. Larry Drew was much faster in that game than the scouting report is on him, and it appears as if he can drive or shoot the 3 at any time he so chooses. Zeller looked like he could care less about defense, but looked good on his mid-range 15 foot shot he hit off the glass. And it is always nice to have a seven footer who can hit a shot (unlike Zoubec). I will bet he is good from the free throw line as well. All in all I can say if we have no losses to the pro’s, we’ll be right back next year. I still worry about our wing. I hope Henson/Wear boys/ and Strickland can light’em up from the outside in 09-010. But I think we can survive a loss or two and be number 1-3 in the ACC.

I also want to give Ed Davis & Tyler Zeller a break. I know in games like these that the guards look to score and could care less about team effort. Put these two guys on any ACC team and they’ll be good. Can’t wait to see them. The most sound players appeared to me to be Tyreke Evans and Elliott Williams. Duke will have someone who can crash the glass next year in Williams. He will be a great fill for DeMarcus Nelson.

Like I said, I take nothing away from a game like this in terms of defense since no one is really playing any though I think they were calling charges last night.

My predict, knowing nothing….
Hansbrough will go pro only if Heels win champ this year.
Lawson will go pro if Heels make it to final two. Or maybe final four.
As I said, I know nothing. What about Green? He is better than his opportunity on this squad.
If he stays another year, look out!
As I said…
