So much basketbal played, so little time. Here is a quick glance at what the ACC schools have been doing over the past four days:
North Carolina: 12/16-W vs. UNC-A 93-62, 12/19-W vs. FAU 105-52
More nice sweet cupcakes for the Heels as they basically work out the kinks ahead of the ACC schedule. The three freshman Brandan Wright, Wayne Ellington, and Ty Lawson have officially arrived which is a huge help to Tyler Hansbrough who is the focus of opposing defenses.
Boston College: 12/17-W vs. Sacred Heart, 101-68
Whatever bug BC had when they lost to Vermont and Providence seems to have gone and they are playing extremely well right now.
Virginia: 12/16-W vs Hampton 91-69, L vs. Applachian St. 80-69
Here’s the thing. I would think that App State would beat UVa in football. Basketball should be a different story…but it wasn’t….in a bad way. App St. shot lights out and UVa did not.
Virginia Tech: 12/17-W vs. Wake Forest 63-60
The Hokies opened up the ACC season with a win over hapless Wake Forest winning by three which proves once more how important it was for VT to hold serve at home. Even the worst teams in the ACC can give you fits.
Miami: 12/16-W vs. Stetson 89-64
Miami got an easy one amid exams by beating Stetson by 25. There are some tougher matchups looming in the next few weeks.
Clemson: 12/19-W vs. Georgia Southern 72-60
Clemson remains undefeated at 11-0 and hold onto to that #22 ranking which will undoubtedly be going away once they play a handful of ACC opponents.
Duke: 12/19-W vs. Kent State, 79-72
I am not sure what defense ESPN could offer against the accusation that they are pro-Duke. If Duke were playing good teams it would be understandable for them to be shown as much as they are but this is the third game in a row in which Duke played a lower tier opponent and had the game shown on ESPN. Of course Duke somehow scored 79 points against Kent State and if you need any further evidence that Duke is overrated look no further than ESPN’s Jay Bilas who along with Andy Katz excludes them from their Power 16 rankings.
Florida State: 12/18-W vs High Point, 81-64
FSU, like UNC, is in a stretch of games against easier opponents which serve as building blocks. FSU struggled in the first half against a High Point team which UNC dominated.
NC State: 12/16-W vs Mt. St Mary’s 80-65
NC State played another game with only six players but shot the ball well and had MSM commit twice the number of fouls. The top ten ranked Crimson Tide of Alabama come to Raleigh on Wednesday give the Pack an incredible test.
Georgia Tech: 12/18-W vs. Centenary 92-52
The Yellow Jackets finally got the ship right ahead of a rivalry game with Georgia. There is an obvious need for GT to gel a young team together and handle those games they should win.
Wake Forest: 12/17-L vs Virginia Tech 63-60, W vs. Gardner Webb 92-60
Wake Forest acquitted themselves quite well at Blacksburg and then trashed everyone’s favorite whipping boy Gardner Webb. The odds are they are still the worst team in the ACC but they may also be a thorn for someone on occasion.
Maryland: Did Not Play
The Terps took a 10 day break for exams.
