ACC Basketball Update(2/5)

Georgia Tech 80 Clemson 62
Boston College 80 Virginia Tech 59
NC State 83 UNC 79
Maryland 79 Wake Forest 72
Virginia 81 Miami 70

Florida State 68 Duke 67

  • Okay, does everyone remember when Duke was winning five straight games and everyone seemed ready to declared them to be “back” even though they had three of five games versus the bottom of the league and the other two were at home? Yeah, that Duke apparently went out to lunch. Duke has once again lost two straight games and the question is whether UNC can make it three straight. It is also notable that Duke has lost two games close which they normally win. Duke is 5-4 with UNC at home this week plus road games at Maryland, Clemson, BC and UNC left on the schedule. They could lose every one of those games and end up 7-9. I am not saying they will but that is not a great road ahead for the Devils.
  • Hokie fans remember: You are still a football school. Beating Duke and UNC does not change that.
  • Notice to Clemson: The wheels have officially come off your wagon, please pull to the shoulder and hope the NCAA Tournament committee gives you a ride to the tournament.
  • I was talking to a Virginia fan tonight who pointed out to me that the schedule is very favorable for the Cavs the rest of the way and it is possible UVa could end up 12-4. He could be right about that though if you factor in the occasional bad loss 11-5 could be the actual mark which is one heck of a season following the debacle in Puerto Rico.
  • Maryland beat someone they were supposed to beat, colored me shocked.
  • As much as Wolfpack fans complained about Herb Sendek not treating the UNC game like it was really important do you think they are happy with Sidney Lowe for not only pumping the team up but actually beating the Heels?
  • T-minus 2 days until College Basketball Armageddon 2007, Part I

Duke has had five games decided by 3 points or less, and has won two and lost three, which is about what might be expected, except that four of these games occurred at Cameron, where they beat Indiana and Clemson, but lost to Virginia Tech and Florida State.

Looking ahead, they only have three more conference home games. Assuming they split with UNC and Maryland and win one of two road games against BC and Clemson, Duke would end up 9-7, its worst record in conference since 1996 and also put it in danger of losing more than 9 games overall for the first time since 1996.

One thing that I don’t believe the media understands is that Duke rose to a level of dominance between 1999 and 2004 perhaps never before seen in the ACC, during the lean years at UNC. Krzyzewski will never again dominate the conference in the same way because he is now back to the status quo ante that existed during the Dean Smith years, i.e., there is another coach in the conference who is just as good as he is.

Unlike UNC last year, which was suddenly caught unaware by losing four underclassmen to the pro’s, Duke has no excuses. They knew that they were losing 3 starters and simply were unable for one reason or another to find suitable replacements in the way that they had in the past, where one star after another filed through Cameron Indoor Stadium without missing a beat.

Arguably, neither Nelson, McRoberts, Zoubek, Henderson, Paulus or Pocius has been as good as predicted when they were signed, not to mention the transfers of highly recruited players like Boykins and Boateng. Just comparing the above personnel to the Duke teams of 1999 or 2004, there really is no comparison in terms of talent.

Nevertheless, Dickie V and some in the media will keep telling us what a great job Krzyzewski is doing. Maybe there are multiple reasons for Duke’s decline, but the main one is that Krzyzewski seems to have lost his recruiting touch, maybe a little bit like Dean Smith did in the late 80’s, before rebounding to go to 4 Final Fours in his last 7 years.

Clemson and VTech are still going to get a decent seed for the NCAA Tournament, but they played against two desperate teams that were in serious need of a big win. I still think that the ACC gets 7-8 teams in the tournament, but who knows? The Selection Committee has done some crazy things before and left out some BCS schools for equally deserving teams from the Horizon, MVC, and other non-BCS confrences.

Right now Clemson is 4-5 in the ACC and has some work to do to even get in the NCAA tournament.

How much is coaching USA basketball hurting Coach K’s recruiting?
