#1 UNC 73 #9 Florida State 58

An extremely well rounded performance from UNC today and this in spite of the fact Tyler Hansbrough struggled while wearing the protective mask for his broken nose and some horrid free throw shooting.  The three freshmen: Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington, and Brandan Wright showed up in a huge way, especially getting the perimeter offense clicking.  Reyshawn Terry also had a very productive game with 10 points and nine rebounds.  One of the key stories of the game was the defense Wright played on Al Thornton who only had 12 points on the day.  Wright has been maligned at times for his effort on defense but is showing signs that he might be starting to get that part of his game worked out and is also making some key plays as the second defender, especially in terms of shot blocking.

The focus of the game seem to center on Hansbrough’s mask and his apparent struggles all game long to adjust to wearing it.  It was obvious that it gave him issues in terms of his vision which was evident in two missed free throws.  Hansbrough also spent almost every free moment adjusting it.  It is also hard to say whether he was as aggressive as normal today because the flow of the game seem to dictate otherwise.  There is no doubt that the Heels need him to get comfortable and be his usual effective presence on the inside.

We are fortunate that we have such depth. If we didn’t have this advantage, can you imagine basically losing Tyler and not having Brandan there? But we can have a poor game from one of our stars and have someone else pick up their game. In any other year, if we lost our big star, we would be in a heap of trouble. It looks like Coach knows a whole lot more than we do.
