So it begins.
For the first time since nine years there is hope in Chapel Hill. Obviously, resurrecting a program mired in mediocrity for nine years takes more than one season. But based on what we have seen so far through the spring and training camp there is an air of confidence in the fan base that at the very least we will see a competitive team on the field. With so many new starters, especially on the offensive side of the ball it is nearly impossible to know what we will get on the field. James Madison might be I-AA but is not a weak team. They are ranked and expected to be a tough challenge which makes this game a great test for the Heels. The nature of first games, especially with inexperienced players, is somewhat chaotic. Game speed is different for those players than practice. Game prep is put to the test, mistakes potentially abound in spades and nerves are a wreck across the board. I also think winning this game is important for the confidence of this team since the opportunities to win might be far and few in between after next week.
Thus begins the Butch Davis era and it will start off a winner.
