An Idea for the Duke Football Job

Apologies to Ted Roof on this one but everyone knows he is a dead man walking at this point.

Tar Heel Wife is a huge reality TV show fan so I have seen enough of them to know that they will make a reality show about almost anything. So in light of this incredible willingness to exploit people using the most asinine idea let me propose the following:

Given the state of Duke football and the possibility that is going to be tough getting any good coach to step into the smelly pile of feces which is Blue Devil football I suggest the next head coach in Durham should be found using a reality TV show. Honestly, what do the Devils have to lose at this point? Take 10-20 head coaches from high school, D-I-AA, II and III and pit them in a series of competitions to test their skills as a head coach with America voting to decide who goes home. You can get a three person judging panel which almost certainly would have to include either Bobby Bowden or Joe Paterno as the witty but brutal overcritical voice on the panel. Bob Davie would be a good choice so he can give us constant comparisons to how he did things at Notre Dame before they summarily dismissed him and you could round out the panel with the AD from Florida since it is painfully obvious to the rest of us he is one of the few ADs in the country who knows what he is doing.

Whoever wins the competition would get a five year contract and the satisfaction of knowing America voted him to take over the worst program in I-A college football.

I am shocked no one at ESPN has thought of this.

I remember about 25 years ago when they fired Red Wilson the day after he beat Carolina to finish up a 6-5 season, saying that they needed to go to the next level. They haven’t gone to the next level, but they have gone to another level.

  2. Wayne says:

Well, Dook DID get to the “next level” when Steve Superior was HC in Durham . . . 7-3-1 in 1988 + 8-4 (ACC co-champs) in 1989.

  3. Chris says:

Wayney, a few facts you didn’t mention……..Steve Sloan took over for Red Wilson and from83-86 was 13-20, hardly the next level. Spurrier was then there for 2 years and was 20-13 as you note above. Since then Duke has had 4 coaches with a collective record of 44-157……6-5 looks pretty good if you look at the whole picture.

did you see in Tudor’s column where he brazenly advocated Duke going after App’s coach? the whole situation is pretty macabre–Roof actually solicited the Fuqua SOB to do some analysis of what makes for a top football program–not sure if the motive was to get valid input, or to make friends in high places–by the end of the season Ted should have about as many friends at Dook as Mike Nifong.

  5. Tar Heel Fan says:

Why would Jerry Moore leave App? He was turned that program into a I-AA powerhouse and they became the first I-AA team to ever beat beat a ranked I-A team. Moore is also 68 years old and something tells me he would like to ride out of Boone into the sunset as a legendary coach who took App from obscurity to the cusp of I-A.

    That’s the way to go!

Duke needs to hire a “name” coach this time. Most high school players good enough to play Div 1 football think at least at first that the NFL is a possibility. Having a name coach, and especially one who already has coached in the NFL is a huge recruiting advantage. Do you want to go play for Ted Roof, or do want to play for Pete Carroll, Butch Davis, Nick Saban, etc. So Duke needs to 1. raise a huge outrageous amount of money, and then 2. convince Coach K somehow that he still is king of athletics at Duke and then, 3. hire Bill Cowher or somebody similar who could recruit and coach like the competiion.

  8. 52BigGameJames says:

Cowher will be taking Foxs’ place next season–decision should come around the 4th game after shaky Jakey throws his 6th or 7th int…course if Fox puts Carr in & somehow things turn around, all bets are off.

  9. Sam from Chicago says:

Its absolutely unbelievable how bad Duke has been in football. I’m a Northwestern fan, and we’ve had some good seasons recently. Does Duke even want to play football? When was the last time they beat North Carolina, or anyone for that matter?

Im looking forward to the beat down on Saturday night in Evanston.
