Well if It Makes You Feel Better

StateFans Nation has posted a video from YouTube of a UNC fan giving his analysis of the UNC-ECU game. SFN took great joy in this poor guy’s misconception that he should be posting videos of himself in a public forum:

Dear High School Recruit,

Think of how it would be to go bust your ass for fans like these. This guy readily admits that he doesn’t have the money to buy a cable package that allowed him to watch the game…but, why let not actually viewing the game impact your ‘analysis’

You know what? This country is flush with people who lack the common sense to know that the last thing they should be doing is putting themselves in front of a web cam and then posting it on YouTube. Sadly enough, some of them can be found amongst our respective fan bases. That being said, if laughing at this guy affords you the feeling of superiority you’ve been missing because UNC has beaten NC State for three straight seasons on the football field(and pretty much everywhere else with a few exceptions) then by all means carry on.

if fan generalizations are the stock in trade at SFN, then parking lot/tail-gate homicides identify tha average Pack fan eh?

I guess that also means that running over people in the Pit can identify the average Tar Heel fan!

Which goes to prove the fallacy of making such connections and basing your view of a whole fan base contingent upon the actions of a few. I know multiple NC State fans and NONE of them like the version of Pack fan presented on Inside Carolina message boards. The same is true in reverse in that I do not know any UNC fans that match the description offered up on NC State message board or SFN. It is childish to name call and make broad generalizations about people just so it will fit into the “world view” you operate with as it relates to the rivarly.

Both fanbases have their mouth-breathing irrational elements, make no mistake about it. Their stock in trade is the overwrought generalization, especially if it has been half-baked and had some outright lies sprinkled on the top. Those folks are like the cousins in the family no one wants to talk about, much less invite to dinner or the family reunion.

Your fellow didn’t fare well on StatefansNation, and had their been an analog equivilant of him wearing red and white whining about losing to Boston College, he would have been eviscerated equally on whatever site UNC partisans posted him.

  5. Tar Heel Fan says:

This is true but certainly not here. I just know too many Pack fans, present company included, who are reasonable and great people in general for me to post something and imply that the lowest common denominator in their fan base is reflective of them. I would be more inclined to criticize the individual and his arguments rather than cast him as the “classic” example of a rival fan.

I thought I would drop by and comment on this. Unfortunately for me, I missed all of this while I was out of town. If there is one thing that we have learned through blogging, it is that there are extremes and moderates in all fan bases. Just like all Pack fans are not tractor driving farmers, all Heel fans are not arrogant, wine drinking snobs. It has also taught us that there are plenty of idiots with keyboards and broadband to overshadow the sane, rational ones. Just as we all put ourselves out there for scrutiny, this person did as well. I’m not defending his bashing, and I didn’t see the videos, but if he didn’t think that someone would get a hold of them and make fun of him he was fooling himself. There are more people waiting to piss in your grits than there are offering up butter.

THF, I would not expect to see your site bashing someone. Period. Class and dignity, which you seem to have both, prevent such endeavors. Unless it’s John Bunting!!

Keep up the good work, and pay your refs a little bit more so they can get better improv skills. It’s no good, it’s no good!! Yes, yes it is.

  7. Tar Heel Fan says:

What bashing? I made a statement of fact. 🙂

I actually weighed it out for several hours and actually took a sort of cowardly route and had it post a 11:59 PM on Friday night with the UNC game preview coming at 6 AM the next morning which buried it to some extent.

  8. thesportsidiot says:

Seems you mistook what I said. I wasn’t saying that you bashed anyone, was saying that you wouldn’t…

Now, as for that cowardly posting time of yours…

well, I was being tongue-in-cheek, but if you counted among your friends the infamous Joe-Joe, (Triangle Sports/talk-State-fan-caller-from-Hell), you would realize that restraint on my part is a Saintly character trait.
