UNC 20 Duke 14 (OT)

Let me just say that if I had just been handed a raise and contract extension the last thing I would do is have my team mail it in versus their rival during the last home game of the season. And maybe that is a little harsh on my part and perhaps it was more of a case of Duke trying win one for the Ol’ Roofer or Duke saw an opportunity and jumped it. Whatever the case it was not a good performance and a missed opportunity to end the season with a bang and set the tone for the spring and next season.

And thus ends year one of the Butch Davis Era.

no Heels fan can be blamed for being a little disappointed for how this all worked out. Just speaking for myself, but add to the fact that Davis wears his faith somewhat conspicuously on his sleeve, and I get a very uncomfortable feeling about the whole thing, but that’s just me.

Davis has set the table for success, although it was not on display yesterday. Yates will have competition from Paulus at QB, the defense will be a year older and wiser, the O-line will get six months of training table, plus spring and fall practice to get ready for next year.

If UNC doesn’t have a winning year next year, UNC fans have cause for concern. In a mostly mediocre ACC, he’s recruiting players that should win if they are adequately coached. If they have another year like this one, as unlikely as that may be, then the questions will start coming about leadership. As it is, based on yesterday, it may be unfair to bring it up.

I just think they blew a chance to end the season on a higher note. Winning is great and maybe Duke was a little more inspired but it was disappointing to not post a decisive win.

Overall I think Coach Davis did a great job, especially given the youth on the team. The margins of losses were slim: ECU 3, Virginia 2, Vtech 7, South Carolina 6, State 4, and Georgia Tech 2. Only Wake Forest and South Florida were blowouts. I think things look very good for this team down the road and that we’ve got the right coach.

THF, I was at the game and for most of it I was completely horrified for all of the reasons you mentioned. However, I can say this – it’s important to remember that no matter how good we are and how bad Duke is, they have generally played us close, especially lately. Coach Davis’ approach seems to be taking each game at a time and not treating them differently. Well, both NC State and Duke (and even East Carolina to a lesser extent) certainly treated their games against us differently. I think that Coadh Davis is more of an x-and-o guy than a ra-ra, beat your rival’s @ss type. And when you have one team jacked up and the other playing on an even keel, that shows, especially at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. And against both NC State and Duke, Carolina had major, major issues, especially early, both getting penetration defesnively and stopping it offensively. Just my two cents.
