UNC at Kentucky

Where: Rupp Arena, Lexington, KY
When: Saturday, December 1st, 2:00 PM
Records: UNC 6-0; UK 4-1

The great road odyssey continues for the Heels who continue their hop scotching across the country to play team all over the place in some of the more hostile environments around.  The latest stop has UNC in Lexington to renew the rivalry between the top two teams on the all time wins list.  UNC has won three straight in this series and lead it all time 19-10.  UK enters the game having won three straight after an incredible debacle versus Gardner-Webb who took the Wildcats by double digits at home.

UK is beset by injuries missing quite a few key players and relying on a very young lineup surrounding leading scorer Joe Crawford.  Freshman Patrick Patterson has been pretty much as advertised so far and should provide an interesting matchup on the blocks for Tyler Hansbrough and Deon Thompson.  Outside those two UK boasts only one other double figures scorer on average and that is Ramel Bradley who also leads the team in assists with 4.0 per game.

The tough part of this game is the same one that bothered them last year and that is having to play this game three days after a draining game versus Ohio State.  Compounding that is the fact it is on the road so in one respect UNC will have to show some more maturity and toughness to maintain intensity for this game.  UNC should easily out man UK both in talent and depth.  Hansbrough was limited last season by the presence of Randolph Morris who has since graduated leaving Patterson as the only significant threat on the blocks.  I would expect Hansbrough to have a big game.  The status of Ty Lawson is still unknown and if I had to guess I say he will not play.  That leaves Bobby Frasor and Quentin Thomas running the point which should be sufficient.  UNC has enough weapons assuming Wayne Ellington keeps up the consistent shooting alongside the usual handiwork from Danny Green.  I am very interested to see how well the defense plays and if the effort of the past two games continues.  The ability to play defense at the level UNC showed Wednesday night is paramount for this team to stay among the top teams in the country.

another afternoon of Dookie V…the agony

  2. C. Michael says:

Apparently Gerald Henderson succeeded in not only breaking Tyler’s nose, but also in redefining what a foul on Tyler was…

  3. Tar Heel Fan says:

    Two things:

    1. If we could hit some shots, we’d be up by 20. The defense has been very good.

    2. My daughter saw Dick Vitale and said “He looks strange.” Out of the mouth of babes.

  4. Wayne says:

While I think Dookie V. deserves plenty of criticism, I don’t think Doris Burke should get a free pass. She is painful to look at. Coyote ugly at best.

Nice game. The only thing good about kentucky were their cheerleaders. Everyone looked good for the Heels. I knew we would pull away once we hit some shots.
Just saw a story on Fox news about the Heels mascot who died last year. He helped to save the lives of 4 people by being a organ donor. Great story. I would link it for you if I knew how.

nice balance on the outside shots, 7/13 reads much better than 4 /20. 15 3-pointers should be the ceiling for attempts. Lawson coming back makes the offense flow much better.

dookie V? i’m not going to deny vitale is getting a bit senile and his yankee accent can drive me up the wall sometimes, but the fact is he’s pretty objective. i hate dook but dook is good, and with exception to the past 3 years, dook was a lot better than the tar heels for the past 10. i mean just look at the acc regular season championships and tourney championships. unc had a decisive lead over acc championships and now it’s either tied or unc is only up by 1. “dookie v” got criticized just as much for being pro-Carolina when Dean was the coach. if people want to hate so much, talk about “Billy a.k.a most redundant when I make a point Packer.”

spot on josh-I’m sure Vitale’s continual raves about Dean & Roy wear thin on some. the shame of Packer is he knows the game and can at times be a great analyst, but he’s so preoccupied with peeps knowing he’s such, he’ll drive the train right off the tracks–he won’t even back down when he’s proven wrong.

giving Frasor a shout out for a great performance yesterday vs UK…way to go Bobby-we need 3 for the 3—E/Green/Frasor-starting to look good!

No question he threw a lotta love to Dean, and still does to UNC (no different than he might to KU, UK, Bobby Knight, Billy Donavan, UCLA). The fact that he can’t stay on topic is what bothers me most…it’s as if he has ADHD.
