Jim Grobe to Arkansas? Last Night: Yes, Now: Staying at Wake

Update #6: Wake’s Scout.com site is confirming that Grobe is staying.

Update #5: All I can say is “wow” Apparently Grobe is having a Roy Williams moment and has changed his mind, that is according to the Hawg Illustrated which was one of the first to break the story Grobe was coming(see original post below.) The word from there is the search for a new Razorback coach resumes.

Update #4: Strange goings on. The Wake Forest message board had a thread started 30 minutes ago saying Grobe was staying. A thread on the Arkansas Scout.com board is saying the same thing. Interesting stuff if this one turns from the virtual inevitability is appeared to have a scant few hours before.

Update #3: And he is getting paid too. Local media in Arkansas put the contract at $2.2 million annually for five years which doubles his salary at Wake.

Update #2: The real question is what does this do to the courting of Navy’s Paul Johnson. Can Wake get in the mix for a guy who would probably be the best candidate to come in and pick up where Grobe left off? And if you are Paul Johnson do you keep SMU, GT and Duke dancing to see if Wake calls?

Update: The Arkansas News Bureau is reporting Jim Grobe will be the next head football coach at Arkansas citing a Razorback Foundation conference call to approve the contract which only happens if the coach has agreed to take the job. In other words, Duke better hurry up because they are about to get local company in the coaching search realm.

Arkansas’ Scout.com site Hawgs Illustrated is reporting that Wake Forest’s Jim Grobe has been tabbed by Arkansas to replace Houston Nutt. Considering the Scout site for UNC, Inside Carolina, broke the Butch Davis hiring this way, there is a very good chance this is a done deal. If Grobe is indeed gone it is basically the fruition of an inevitable moment building since Wake Forest won the ACC title and went 11-3.

Hat tip to StateFans Nation for having first bead on these developments.

The coaching carousel is a nice diversion between the end of the regular season and the beginning of the bowls. But it’s a lot more entertaining when your own school is uninvolved! Good for Wake – unless Michigan comes after Grobe. But it seems to me he’ll stay put after going through all this turmoil once with Ark. The rumors are fun, but you can’t count on anything until the official press conference.

You can’t make this stuff up.
    Truth is stranger than fiction.
