UNC Hires Defensive Coordinator

Well that did not take long.  UNC has hired Minnesota defensive coordinator and DB coach Everett Withers to replace Chuck Pagano who left last week for the NFL.  It is probably worth mentioning that Minnesota was dead last in total defense among D-I schools.  The standard explanations I am seeing for this are related to the level of talent Withers had to work with at Minnesota. If the Scout.com recruiting rankings mean anything, this was probably the case since Minnesota has not been higher than 56th in the rankings since 2004 until 2008 when they had the 28th ranked class.   Speaking for myself, we have to wait and see how it goes, especially since UNC has markedly better players on defense that the Golden Gophers appear to have.

One Response to UNC Hires Defensive Coordinator

  1. I think this is a good hire. Here’s a snippet from his 2006 Tennessee Titans bio [H/T Nashville Heel on IC TTP]:

“A veteran of 13 college seasons, Withers guided a Longhorns secondary which ranked 75th in the nation in pass defense in 1997 (132.7 efficiency rating) to first in the nation in 2000 (88.02). Withers is credited with helping a young corps of defensive backs improve in a number of statistical categories after becoming familiar with the pro-style man-coverage philosophy.”

Withers joined the Longhorns after three seasons (1995-97) as defensive coordinator at Louisville. His 1996 defensive unit ranked fourth nationally in both total defense (235.8) and rushing defense (81.1) and led the NCAA in forced turnovers (41).”

I think Withers is a strong pick up for us and a big loss for a struggling Minnesota program.
