UNC at NCSU: Open Thread

I will drop some thoughts along the way feel free to do the same.

7:11 PM: Through the first five minutes both offenses have been hitting almost everything. This may be an issue of who goes cold first. Thomas looking good at point with a nice drive for a shot and Ellington looks on early. Also, refs letting them play right now.

7:21 PM: NCSU 15-11. UNC really cannot run an offense without Thomas and Hansbrough out. And it looks like UNC has gone cold first.

7:28 PM: Tied at 21. I am operating on the assumption State cannot keep shooting as well as they have. Jay Bilas had an odd comment on Hansbrough dribble under the basket then shot. He said he “traveled but with a dribble” What? I think he thought it was a walk and midway through saying it he realized he was actually dribbling the ball.

7:45 PM: Halftime. UNC 34 NCSU 31. Incredible play to end the half moving the ball around and getting the open three from Ellington who was clutch to hit it and give the Heels the lead. That is important from a momentum standpoint since NCSU had led for a while shooting the ball very well most of the half and still finds themselves down. I do not think UNC’s defense has been all that bad, they have forced TOs. The offensive pace is slower than the Heels like which means they are not getting shots as often as they like. At this point I am not worried. I think UNC controls the 2nd half but they need to focus and play with intensity for the final 20 minutes.

8:09 PM: UNC up 10 now. Honestly, QT has become just a slower version of Lawson. His penetration is not as good but when he gets it he is starting to finish with good shots. And Tyler Hansbrough is freaking ridiculous at this point.

8:22 PM: UNC up 15 at the 2nd TV timeout of the 2nd half. I have been impressed more times than not this season at UNC’s ability to come out of the locker room and dismantled a team during the first eight minutes of the second stanza. They really turned up the defense and got the lead out 18 before giving a little back. Barring a collapse of Clemsonic proportions this game should be done.

8:29 PM: Wow. What piss poor transition defense by NCSU off a made basket Ginyard gets down court and is able to dunk the ball uncontested.

8:40 PM: Wolfpack fans are booing the effort as Ginyard goes down the lane and dunks it. Lowe has Hickson on the bench for 10 minutes now because he failed to box out on Hansbrough. It has been said by many Pack fans that their team has zero heart and laying down in front of the hated Heels is proof of that. Heels now up 20.

8:53 PM: Taking. Care. Of. Business. Heels win 84-70 and it was not that close.

I wonder if we’ll see Campbell spell at point?

  2. Tar Heel Fan says:

Who knows…tough having both Ginyard and Thomas out there at the same time.

  3. 52BigGameJames says:

Deon hasn’t received the ball in appropriate scoring position yet.

  4. 52BigGameJames says:

is it just me or does Bobby Jones pass as James Taylor?

  5. Tar Heel Fan says:

    Maybe with some longer hair?

  6. 52BigGameJames says:

they had MJ as #13 all-time–that list will need revision when Tyler leaves.

  7. 52BigGameJames says:

    I really like Stepheson’s on-court demeanor.

  8. Tar Heel Fan says:

Bilas is correct. This is going to be a better team when Lawson comes back. All these guys had to learn how to step up and play huge when he was out. I really hope we see this team gel when he comes back into what the 2005 team was.

  9. 52BigGameJames says:

I’m seeing Marcus assert himself more offensively–got to love that!

  10. Tar Heel Fan says:

    Nice defense Costner.

  11. C. Michael says:

I am beginning to wonder if Alex is a better compliment to Tyler.

Q has become a different player. He looks like the guy I saw in HS who was a consensus Top-40 player.

  12. Tar Heel Fan says:

You might be right about that. I am not sure we too much more in the way of offense since Hansbrough can apparently score any time he wants to and incidentally when was the last time we saw something like that. Sean May? Antawn Jamison?

  13. C. Michael says:

May, but only the last 10 games of 2005. For a season, I’d say Jamison. Regardless, it is pretty heady company.

  14. 52BigGameJames says:

Sid’s definitely having to deal with maturity issues.

  15. C. Michael says:

This team fun to root for.

  16. william says:

I don’t think this team will ever be in the same class as the 2005 team.

That team was better at every position, except center, which is a wash between Tyler and Sean. Danny Green is a great sixth man, but he is no Marvin Williams. The 2005 team was much better at shooting, offensive in general, defense and was faster. UNC and Illinois were clearly the class of that year, virtually from day 2.

Marvin William, McCants and Felton are doing quite well in the NBA, although Sean has been hampered by injuries. The current team is better at free throws and the 2008 Q is much better than th 2005 Q, who, strangely enough, was still the back-up.

Except for the game Felton missed, the 2005 team lost only to two top five teams, on the road, and to the defending national runner-up in McCants first game back. They beat a truly great team to win the title, essentially on Illinois’ home court. The Illini were probably, along with 1999 Duke and 1993 Michigan, the best runner-up in the last 20 years.

This is a very nice team and if it can begin to hit the outside shot, has a good shot to win the title just like the 1993 team, but I don’t without substantial improvement I don’t see it as an all time great team like our 1982 and 2005 squads.

  17. C. Michael says:

“I don’t think this team will ever be in the same class as the 2005 team….but I don’t without substantial improvement I don’t see it as an all time great team like our 1982 and 2005 squads.”

Umm, who gives a poop? And I am not disparaging your opinion, in some ways, I agree with it, but will be winning a Title this year be any less special than in ’82 or ’05???

  18. Whew. I have had a bad feeling about this game all day long. You can thank the second half explosion on our leaving the restaurant to reverse the mojo.

Make checks payable to BBE. Thanks.

  19. william says:

I give a bunch of poop. Maybe it is because I lived in Brazil and picked up their soccer ethic but there is something to be said for winning beautifully. One reason why people love and remember those Laker teams of the late 1980’s, maybe more than the Bulls who followed them is because they won playing beautiful basketball.

Don’t get me wrong. A title is very, very difficult to achieve and I will take it anyway possible. We have only won four titles in 50 years and we are fourth all time on the list–that is how hard it is to win–and Carolina has had several beautiful teams not win it all, as in 1984 and 1987, so you need to be lucky and good. But if a team can be lucky and good and play beautiful basketball, so much the better….

  20. Tar Heel Fan says:

I think different teams are special to different fans for various reasons that sometimes have nothing to do with the team. My favorite was 1993 but that had a lot to do with being a senior in HS and it being my last year at home.

  21. william says:

Q.T. was 5-7 from the floor, with 7 assists and only two turn-overs. Great going for the senior!

  22. william says:

DC is unfortunately getting the Maryland game, but it looks like Miami is giving Duke a tough game so far….

  23. william says:

That is for sure, THF. I was a junior in high school when Michael hit his big shot against Georgetown and I remember just sitting in class that semester and thinking about that game over and over….

  24. TxTarheel says:

the 1998 team also played a beautiful game, IMHO. Winning beautiful or winning ugly still counts the same in the record books. Just don’t go all Norman Dale on us

  25. Tar Heel Fan says:

I am watching Duke-Miami and Brian Asbury is lighting Duke up so far. I expect that to cool off but Paulus is having problems on defense because Miami has two quick guards. Right now Duke is using Zoubek quite a bit.

  26. 52BigGameJames says:

our last trip to Disney was in that 05 year… it so happens we’re going back again this Spring break 🙂

outside of Q, the one connecting thread is still the most important: Roy & the coaching staff.
based on their current trajectory, I would agree, but it’s STILL a work in progress. one or two more role adjustments/refinements and we’re ready imo for a title run. Like Michael, I’m not entirely sure Deon goes into the Tourney as the starter.

  27. Tar Heel Fan says:

Miami is also outplaying Duke and the Devils are cold save for Taylor King shooting from 25 feet out.

  28. william says:

UNC in general, as well as Kansas under Roy, has been known for playing aesthetically (anybody remember that word from freshman year?) beautiful basketball. That is one of the things that really helps recruiting. Kids don’t want to play for a team that plays in the 50’s every night.

That used to be the knock against us, circa 1989, when people said we were not tough enough to beat Duke. It wasn’t true, just like it wasn’t true when people said the same thing about the 1980’s Lakers versus the supposedly tougher Celtics….

  29. 52BigGameJames says:

don’t be dissin the Gang-Green william

  30. Tar Heel Fan says:

I agree this team has won ugly and some of that has to do with the fact Tyler Hansbrough plays ugly in many ways. However when Lawson gets things cooking, they can play that glorious well oiled machine game. And when I referenced 2005 I was referencing the possibility of getting everyone back and meshing into a team that can run the NCAA table.

  31. william says:

I love Tyler! You guys are acting like I am dissing Monet, just because I say I think Van Gogh is better!

  32. 52BigGameJames says:

don’t forget to take a peek at the eclipse tonight–pretty spectacular right now!

  33. chad says:

I can’t believe Tyler put the ball on the floor from top of the key and created a shot for once! He did that twice actually! Sweet jesus, are we finally playing ball? And did I see some dribble penetration tonight? Good lord…….. At least we’re improving.

  34. 52BigGameJames says:

Roy said in pg that their spacing was better and allowed for that.

  35. william says:

Yeah, I just went out to look at it. Maybe I will go back out in about five minutes, it should be good then….

  36. william says:

    Ca plane pour moi!

  37. Tar Heel Fan says:

For those who are watching other games, Duke is in deep crap at Miami. About to be down 15 at the first TV timeout of the 2nd half. They look horrible and Miami is outplaying them at every turn.

  38. william says:

Ca plane pour moi! Go Hurricanes!

  39. 52BigGameJames says:

Canes 54 Dook 39 down goes Frazia

  40. william says:

We have stinking Maryland and VPI. 34-32 with 16 minutes to play.

  41. william says:

George Foreman sure has lived a charmed life. Everybody I know has one of those grills….

  42. 52BigGameJames says:

Canes employing a good zone and attacking the basket

  43. Tar Heel Fan says:

Duke down 20 with 13 left. Miami is on fire and Duke looks lost.

  44. Tar Heel Fan says:

Oh and Duke also has 19 turnovers.

  45. william says:

Probably time for one of those patented Duke comebacks…. Wait a minute, who has the patent on those anyway?

  46. william says:

Kansas State, a team that Ken Pomeroy insists is better than UNC is losing at Nebraska with ten minutes to go, 52-49….

  47. 52BigGameJames says:

nobody deserves it more–who else can you think of who benefitted more from a personality change–got to be one of the most inspirational figures in modern culture! George Jr must be proud-as is Georgina, Georgie, etc, etc.

  48. william says:

I agree with you James. They say that people don’t change–well, sometimes they do! He is a great man.

  49. william says:

I am watching the Duke-Miami play-by-play in real time on ESPN.com. Woo hoo! I can’t believe our local affiliate chose the Maryland VPI game just because those are the two most popular ACC teams in the DC area.

  50. william says:

Watching VPI play is like watching paint dry….

  51. 52BigGameJames says:

on the flip side, I met and talked with Smokin Joe in 96–he was still visibly bitter about his relationship with Ali, although there was legitimate basis for it–but the fact remains that the bitterness is slow death to the possesor…very sad story really.

  52. william says:

That brunette on the Geico commercial with the Pips has some bodacious …. I’m just saying….

  53. chad says:

duke is getting STOMPED! miami is up by 15 with 8 min to go!

  54. 52BigGameJames says:

it will be interesting to see what the impact on Duke will be if this plays out. K’s better teams (and this was beginning to look like one) are anything but psychologically fragile.

  55. william says:

He and Ali beat the piss out of each other. I have never seen fights as intense as their first and third fight. Ali “won” the third fight but he was never the same after that bout. He could barely stand up after that fight. I still wonder if Frazier had come out for the 14th if Ali might have folded.

They say that the worse thing that ever happened to Ali was that after he came back, he found out he could take a punch better than anybody and began using the rope-a-dope instead of his old style, leading to his eventual Parkinson’s….

  56. Tar Heel Fan says:

Miami just needs to trade baskets and use clock. If this hold we will have seen an amazing span of two games where UNC and Duke basically flip positions in terms of the quality of play and perception of how good each team is.

  57. william says:

Is Duke treading water or do they look like they have a miracle in them?

  58. william says:

I am a big fan of computer rankings but they still cannot tell certain things that a person can see with his eyes. Duke has been playing way, way over their heads and talent level, a bit like Carolina did two years ago….

  59. william says:

Does Miami look as good as Duke, as Wake did, or is Duke just playing horrible?

  60. Tar Heel Fan says:

Miami is playing a 2-3 matchup zone which has shut off the penetration and limited any interior work by Zoubek, Singler or Thomas. Since Duke is down they have to score and quickly so they are jacking threes which are available over the zone and they are simply not hitting them.

  61. 52BigGameJames says:

agreed–“personal will personified” by both of em, like maybe never witnessed in any other sport! Ali said after #2 (I believe) it was “like death”.

Besides being played as the Uncle Tom, my understanding is Joe loaned Ali money early in their careers, and was betrayed & bewildered by Ali’s “marketing”.

  62. Tar Heel Fan says:

Miami is actually playing stupid basketball. They keep committing dumb turnovers and putting up quick shots early in the clock instead of working the offense to shorten the game.

  63. 52BigGameJames says:

    Collins is “dumb insurance”

  64. 52BigGameJames says:

  65. Tar Heel Fan says:

I don’t remember the Collins kid when the Heels played Miami.

  66. Tar Heel Fan says:

Miami is dumb as dirt….really. I think Frank Haith is a decent coach but he has to tell his guys to pull the ball out and run some clock.

  67. 52BigGameJames says:

is there any doubt at all that if Memphis played in this conference they would be unblemished?

  68. william says:

Yeah, I saw that special on HBO. Joe was, in many ways, more authentic, but the media loved Ali, as he basically created the black athletic personality that is all but obligatory today. Terrell Owens and all the rest are just following Ali, while Frazier was in the Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Joe Louis mode that up to then had always made a black athlete more popular.

Ali said that he had huge problems with left hooks, hence the famous Ali-Frazier-Foreman triangle which proves that styles make match-ups. Frazier just punished him on the inside. Ali had one of those faces that didn’t show punishment very much, even in his debacle against Holmes, and the real damage being done was not apparent until much later. Ali rarely had easy fights after regaining the title and absorbed frightening punishment from Foreman, Frazier, Norton, Shavers and others.

  69. william says:

Is Miami going to blow it?

  70. 52BigGameJames says:

    they’re trying their best

  71. william says:

VPI is going to beat Maryland….

  72. Tar Heel Fan says:

They are looking very Clemson-like right now. I see Maryland is trying their best to give up a chance to take solo possession of 3rd.

  73. william says:

Terps trail by four with less than 2 and Tech has the ball….

  74. william says:

    Hokies by 7….

  75. william says:

Tech by five, under a minute…. Vasallo at the line….

  76. Tar Heel Fan says:

Miami up eight with 2:13 left. Duke shooting FTs.

  77. william says:

Come on Canes, don’t blow it….

  78. 52BigGameJames says:

is Gary bleating at the bench, lol?

  79. william says:

Tech by 6 with forty seconds to play….

  80. william says:

    maryland hits a 3

  81. Tar Heel Fan says:

1:37 left. Miami up eight but they keep fouling Duke early in the shot clock so Duke gets to score points without the clock moving. Upside to that is they are limited to a max of two points.

Scheyer makes two FTs, Miami up six now.

  82. william says:

Tech by five with thirty seconds, left, Maryland has the ball….

  83. Tar Heel Fan says:

    Duke has started fouling Miami.

    And Miami misses both FTs.

And Miami fouls Scheyer while shooting a three. Holy crap! Three FTs for Scheyer now.

  84. william says:

    VPI has it!

  85. william says:

Didn’t we beat Tech at home and lose to Maryland at home?

  86. william says:

Tech by four with 16 seconds left and at the line….

  87. Tar Heel Fan says:

1:29 left. Miami up only four now.

  88. william says:

Miami is going to blow it, aren’t they?

  89. Tar Heel Fan says:

Paulus with a three to close to one and misses. Asbury rebounds with 40 seconds left. 85% FT shooter going to the line.

  90. 52BigGameJames says:

Paulus the potential goat–& Billy called it!

  91. william says:

    Tech wins it!

  92. Tar Heel Fan says:

Asbury makes both to put Miami up six.

  93. Tar Heel Fan says:

Duke takes the two with 35 seconds left and calls timeout. Miami up four.

  94. william says:

Just cause he missed a three makes him a goat?

  95. william says:

69 to 65, VPI wins and they love 69 in Blacksburg….

  96. Tar Heel Fan says:

Maryland blew a huge chance with that one.

McClinton, best FT shooter in the ACC going to the line with 29 secs left and Miami up four.

  97. 52BigGameJames says:

the way he took it and the situation I would say yes–THF?

  98. william says:

Nebraska beats kSU so Pomeroy may actually have to drop them below us with 7 losses….

  99. Tar Heel Fan says:

McClinton makes one of two. Duke gets a layup from Paulus with 18 seconds left and Miami now up three.

  100. william says:

  101. Tar Heel Fan says:

Yes, he rushed the shot there when a two was probably available since Miami was overguarding the perimeter.

  102. william says:

93 to 90? We have Law and Order, why don’t they switch games….

  103. Tar Heel Fan says:

Miami cannot inbound and uses their last timeout.

  104. 52BigGameJames says:

but Miami may bail him yet…

  105. william says:

I am burning up my lap top hitting refresh on the ESPN site….

  106. william says:

Nothing happening, must be a time-out…

  107. Tar Heel Fan says:

    Asbury makes one of two.

Duke closes to two with 2 seconds left

McClinton to the line shooting two.

  108. 52BigGameJames says:

ROFL: anncr: “it didn’t have to be this way for Miami”

  109. william says:

    Foul on Paulus?

  110. Tar Heel Fan says:

Miami up four with 2 secs left…Miami wins!

  111. Tar Heel Fan says:

Nelson tosses a three in at the buzzer…Miami 96 Duke 95

  112. william says:

Miami by 2 with five seconds?

  113. Tar Heel Fan says:

Oh and Miami fans have zero storming the floor technique.

  114. william says:

That is so sweet! It makes it even sweeter that Duke had one of their patented comebacks and fails!

  115. william says:

Espn says there are still two seconds left….

  116. Tar Heel Fan says:

Put UNC back on the inside track for #1 seed in the East, though MD losing hurts us because it makes one of our losses look worse.

  117. 52BigGameJames says:

    it’s OVAH!

  118. william says:

What about Duke losing to a team we hosed on that very court….

  119. william says:

I think the committee will understand that Q wasn’t our point guard when we lost to Maryland, lol….

  120. Tar Heel Fan says:

ESPN is slow. Game is over. Nelson hit a meaningless three at the buzzer but it did not matter.

Here is a nice irony for you. The local news here leads off with the 38 lacrosse players not accused of the non-rape are suing Duke and the city of Durham for screwing their season over two years ago. Not a good night for Duke

  121. 52BigGameJames says:

w/out our starting pg–oops-not supposed to reference injuries.

  122. Tar Heel Fan says:

I should turn on 850 AM and listen to what excuses K offer Bob Harris this time.

  123. william says:

If we beat Duke, then Duke needs to win the tournament. If they beat us again, then we need to win the tournament. If neither of us win the tournament, then losing to Maryland and Duke is better than losing to Wake and Miami and Pittsburgh….

  124. william says:

They are lucky they were not in Virginia. They would be in prison in the Commonwealth of Facist Virginia….

  125. william says:

Damn!. Ben’s team lost to ole Miss….

  126. william says:

I am hoping to see Ben and Tyler mix it up in the tourney….

  127. william says:

Miami hit 57% from the floor and Duke had 22 turnovers. It doesn’t sound like Duke played very well.

  128. 52BigGameJames says:

if not for Scheyer, it would’ve been a small blowout.

gotta say night, but want to add, a couple of my favs were Thomas “Hit-Man Hearns, and Pernell “Sweet-Pea” Whitaker.

  129. william says:

what about Aaron the Hawk Pryor?

  130. william says:

yeah, it’s been a great nite! Q and the Heels were pretty darn good and Duke loses a heartbreaker!

  131. 52BigGameJames says:

recall the name, but didn’t follow him–what period/what signature?

  132. william says:

He had those brutal battles with Arguello. They show them on ESPN Classic from time to time….

  133. Josh Bowling says:

I just want to say one thing about the 2005 comparison with this year. I agree with the fact that this team may not possess some of the skills of that team. We are just as good in a different way. I do not think the field this year is as good as the field that year as well, so we could afford not to be as perfecto.–I hope.
