UNC vs Florida State

Where: Dean Smith Center, Chapel Hill, NC
When: Tuesday, March 4th, 8:00 PM
TV: Raycom

Records: UNC 27-2, 12-2 ACC; FSU 17-12, 6-8 ACC

FSU guard Toney Douglas told Andy Katz they were going to “shock the world” which might be the most asinine thing a FSU player has done in relation to UNC since Sam Cassell wagged his tongue at the camera in 1993.

Senior Night and really this should be all about Quentin Thomas who is four wins away from being the all time winningest Tar Heel basketball ever. Pretty hefty company for QT and if you are inclined be sure to check out the N&O feature today on the senior point guard. The article covers the frustrations and failure over the past four years and how so many times QT felt like quitting but was bolstered by his family who told him to be patient and “his time would come.” It came on February 3rd against these same Seminoles and despite the loss versus Duke(which, according to the article, QT apologized to his teammates for) this senior has found more than a measure of redemption in keep this team afloat in perhaps the worst stretch of injuries I think I have ever seen on one UNC team.

Last night I was watching Kansas play Texas Tech on Senior Night in Lawrence. Since the Jayhawks had wiped the Red Raiders off the face of the planet by midway through the 2nd half, Kansas had the luxury of playing all their seniors for extended minutes and some fan favorites had the opportunity to score. Then at the end Bill Self put all the seniors in and then brought them out one at a time for an ovation. If you asked me what the best scenario would be for tonight, it would be UNC blowing the doors off FSU with QT having a great game and with about 2-3 minutes left, Roy sends a sub in for QT so he can exit the game to a wild standing ovation at the Dean Dome. For all the times we as fans have questioned QT’s abilities and cringed at watching him run the offense it is only fitting that a sold out Smith Center should come to their feet and offer QT a measure of recognition. UNC fans should offer nothing but gratitude for what QT did during a crucial stretch this season and also to say thank you for rising to the moment when the Heels needed it most. In other words, thanks for being a senior.

THF, it got a little misty here at my computer just reading about Q coming out for the final time at the Dean Dome.

  2. Creecher says:

Very well said. THF. Very well indeed.

  3. […] is looking to pop our bubble tonight. OK then. The game is a bit more dangerous than it may seem. The Seminoles gave us everything they had […]

  4. Howard says:

The N&O story is wonderful. Well written. Thanks for pointing it out to those of us not living in the Triangle.

  5. 52BigGameJames says:

would be a fitting tribute indeed–good stuff THF!

3 PM today on ESPN Classic is the two hour replay of the 1993 classic.

    THF,

He also said they should have won last time. Right, so you take out our PG in the opening minutes of the game in a vicious way and then we have to bring in a backup that had never played more than 24 minutes ever, you try to manhandle Tyler by throwing him around and he struggles, and it STILL took a three from the aforementioned dirty player (his first ever three) to even send it to OT. Yes, they should have won. But even in those circumstances, they couldn’t. Now, we have the PG back, our backup is more experienced, Tyler is hungry and it’s senior day.

    Not the same game, Toney.

  8. william says:

I think that FSU is better than Wake Forest. It could be a tough game.

  9. We need to take care of business on defense and find our rhythm with Ty on offense. If we can do that, I don’t care it it’s a one point win.

And for those of you attending the game:

    (1) Stay until the end for Q’s Senior Speech

    (2) Don’t throw things at Ryan Reid, let PsychoT handle it.

    (3) If you must throw things at Ryan Reid, make sure you clear the audience seating. (TIP: Dense things (rocks, batteries, lead pipes, bricks) carry more inertia than lighter things (souvenir cups)).

  10. william says:

Throwing things at anyone constitutes attempted battery and is always unacceptable regardless of the circumstances.

  11. Josh Bowling says:

Not so William. All ten players throw the basketball around. And you don’t necessarily have to throw objects at people, you could always throw objects at “things”.

  12. Silent Sam says:

What was it senior leader Gavin Grant said before the season?

“With the incoming freshmen we have coming in here and what we have coming back, I don’t see us losing any more than four games this year,” Grant began. “Honestly. If we stay healthy, I think we have the talent to be a Final Four team and contend for a national championship.”

Pausing briefly to take a breath that surely will fan the flames, Grant continued.

“I’m not just saying that because I’m here,” he said. “Looking at the talent we have, I firmly believe that we can play with anyone in the country. There’s no team in the country that can beat us. We can only beat ourselves.”

Looks like by time the season ends, State will have “beaten themselves” about 16 times.

Even though Douglas COULD end up being right, there never seems to be an end to the list of athletes who love to have their mouths write checks their bodies can’t cash.

  13. heels1fan says:

Tar Heel fans should not throw things, as William said.

We boo only those who have it coming . . . Reid every time he touches the ball; Henderson, every time he steps on the court; and any palyer who flagrantly fouls our guys. There is a time and a place . . . but we have too much class to act like “other team’s fans.” Tar Heel basketball . . . good, clean fun!

  14. Schwartzy says:

I’ll admit that I’ve been rather critical of Q in the past. I thought he turned the ball over like he was being paid for it. However, this stretch of games he has completely overturned every notion I had about him. He has played like the national champion that he is, and I can think of no better way to give him what he deserves than to win another one. Beat FSU,
    QUUUUUUUUUE!

  15. *Official BBE DISCLAIMER*

Born and Bred Ed’s feeble and obtuse attempts at satire and/or other undefined wit should not be construed as promoting, condoning, encouraging, authorizing or otherwise tolerating unsportsmanlike, tortious or illegal behavior. Tar Heel fans should always conduct themselves in a classy manner so as to be distinguishable from fans of other Triangle ACC teams. Turn It Blue.

    Go Heels!

    right on……………”Q”–good call THF!
