Odds and Ends

Tying up loose ends prior to being utterly consumed by over 30 hours of basketball in the next four days.

  • UNC-Duke showed Memphis-Tennessee how it is done according to the ratings. The regular season finale for the greatest rivalry in college basketball broke the record set by Memphis-UT earlier this season pulling 5.6 million viewers as opposed to the 5.2 million who tuned in to watch the #1 vs #2 matchup. The Tar Heel win was the highest rated college basketball game ever seen on ESPN.
  • According to Joe Lunardi of ESPN and Jerry Palm of CollegeRPI in interviews with Adam Gold on 850 AM Tuesday morning, UNC is nearly locked into a #1 seed and if they win the ACC Tournament they will be the #1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. Lunardi seemed sure that even if UNC lost as long as it did not come on Friday they would still be a #1 seed but if they want to stay in the East Regional they probably need to win the ACCT that is unless someone else stumbles. Palm went as far as to call UNC a 98% lock for a #1 seed assuming they do not drop the Friday game to the FSU-Wake winner.
  • According to ACC Now, Mike Krzyzewski is still upset over the fact Gerald Henderson had to sit in the stands while serving his one game suspension during the Duke-NCSU game in the ACC Tournament last season. That’s right, K was perturbed over the manner in which Henderson was treated in being forced to the stands by ACC officials. Meanwhile Tyler Hansbrough was having to practice and play with a protective mask on during the tournament which was uncomfortable and affected his production. But let’s never forget the real victim is poor Gerald who was not allowed to sit with teammates during the game.
  • UNC will practice at home and then head to Charlotte on Thursday evening. Roy said during his Monday radio program that it appears the injuries are starting to heal up. He deemed Lawson to be about 80-85% and that Deon Thompson, Quentin Thomas and Marcus Ginyard were all getting better. The Heels are practicing light for a few days before getting into it more on Wednesday and Thursday.
  • And finally, Roy thought Danny Green’s posterization of Greg Paulus was a stupid basketball play and he is probably right considering in a 3 on 1 break with the defender in the middle, the offensive players should do a better job in working the ball for an open path to the basket. The saving grace for Green is the fact Paulus was actually flopping and start falling backward before Green even made contact. It just goes to show that sometimes the plays fans and players get excited about are ones that make coaches cringe.

I way disagree with Roy re. Danny v. Paulus. If you look at the film, Paulus was so far back he “effectively” cut off the angles of all 3 Tar Heels, so there was really no “correct” option. This is why they have the 3 foot line in the NBA under the basket and something the NCAA should look into adopting.

  2. Jim U. says:

Agree with C. Michael. Paulus was too deep. Danny had a good play.

not to mention the “man-up” factor. it’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it! I guarantee you K wouldn’t pull that punch.

  4. Tar Heel Fan says:

I think Roy is saying that you don’t pass back and allow the defender time to set up and take the charge. His issue was all Paulus had to do was take the charge and he probably teaches them to do something to draw the defender into an unfavorable position.

Of course I enjoyed it…immensely…and I was glad to see the refs did not succumb to the flopping of Duke.

Speaking of which…anyone seen this yet?

  5. C. Michael says:

That video had me rollin’ this morning. The best part is the constant replay of Paulus’ flop against VCU last year.

  6. Tar Heel alum and fan says:

Sounds like UNC should win the ACCT if it wants the #1 seed in the East. I hope Tennessee, Memphis, UCLA and Kansas (and Duke for that matter) are all either #1 seeds or in some other bracket so we don’t have to deal with them early.

On the Green posterization of Paulus, it may have been a bad basketball play but it sure is great video (I’ve watched it with great enjoyment at least 20 times)!

I am pretty excited Ty will be starting on Friday.
