UNC 68 VT 66

Tyler Freaking Hansbrough

That about sums it up. 26 points and nine rebounds to carry the team on a day when Danny Green and Wayne Ellington went MIA(again) for most of the contest. Ellington did decide to show back uplate but got a technical foul for running his mouth. Good thing for him he backed it up by hitting a three to tie the game(not that we condone taunting other players.) Ty Lawson is still not 100% but the look he got into the lane was a good one he just missed the shot. The difference ended up being the fact Hansbrough is relentless and clutch.

Heels advance and in March it matters not one iota how it happens.

Wayne Ellington wins the “good news-bad news” award for the game.

Seth Greenberg showed that he really did deserve ACC COY. Sorry I doubted him.

I dislike Deron Washington so much that I think that if he wasn’t a senior he ought to go ahead and transfer to Duke.

  2. Chris Tutino says:

What an effort by VT. Their defense forced us to miss shots and take bad ones. Should be a great final tomorrow no matter who wins the next quarterfinal!

  3. Dfrom Fl says:

Heart failure but now recovered! Ugly but a big fat W

  4. TxTarheel says:

I know tomorrow’s game still looms on the horizon, but have to think that cements UNC as # 1 seed in the East / Charlotte region/pod (which ever they label it). I’d just assume Clemson knock out Duke, although facing Clemson a 3rd time would be tougher.

  5. Josh Bowling says:

I really get too emotionally invested in these Carolina games. I am sure ncaa basketball leads to heart failures for some. No reason for that at all. I wish I was the type of guy who just watches the games for the sake of socializing and drinking a cold one, but I could care less about that as my only motive is UNC winning.

  6. Josh Bowling says:

THF, How is the Duke game going?

  7. TxTarheel says:

I don’t think you’re necessarily alone in these March games. In seasons such as this one with a lot at stake (ACC, NCAA title aspirations) I assume we have all invested much to this point. And that’s just watching others play.

Clemson is ahead by 5 points with about 15 minutes left to play.

By the end of the first half I was really nervous,
and I kept thinking about last years Georgetown
game that knocked us out the Tourney. We played
timidly for most of the game, but late in the 2nd half
when I was expecting Ellington or Green to pick up
the slack, instead Graves did a great job of showing
some intensity with the and 1 play. Next game I feel
like we can do some defensive damage early if we do
a bit more half court trapping.
    Go Heels!!!

  9. Tar Heel Fan says:

We are under a severe weather warning with a split screen on the local station so watching the game is difficult right now. I think this is the same system that wreaked havoc in Atlanta.

  10. TxTarheel says:

Clemson ahead by 6 points with little more than 4 minutes left…Clemson’s FT shooting is actually helping today

  11. Santiago says:

    Now I think we’re a 1 seed.

  12. TxTarheel says:

clemson wins 76-72…don’t know the exacts but Duke was maybe 5-23 from 3-point range. Nelson did a lot but Clemson made plays & made FT when it counted.

I do not look forward to a 3rd meeting

  13. 52BigGameJames says:

I’m happy for Clemson–James Mays is a class kid.

  14. Tar Heel Fan says:

I am not worried about it. I think it will be tough to win against them again because they look like a team on a mission but I think we are in a great position in terms of the NCAA Tournament. Winning removes all doubt that the Heels are #1 in the East however.

  15. Tar Heel Fan says:

    52,

Did you make it through those storms okay? Saw that it rolled right through your neck of the woods.

  16. 52BigGameJames says:

missed us by about 8 miles to the northwest–thanks for asking–hope nobody was hurt along that line.

  17. keithunc says:

WOW! What a game. Ellington is a stud! No matter the technical foul. Game in and game out he is a tough rebounder, and once he gets it he is a fast break waiting to happen. Tyler gets all the accolades and well deserves it but with out Ellington we would be in trouble. GO HEELS!!!! OH Yeah congrats to Clemson for betting dookies….

  18. 52BigGameJames says:

I know I’ll sound like a broken record, but wasn’t it obvious to others today that Marcus could be a very valuable offensive player, if he were to assume more responsibility on offense. He could be a slasher-extraordinaire when needed, and it was definitely needed today!

  19. SamUNC says:

ANyone know what Ellington’s technical was about?

  20. SamUNC says:

Below is from Roy Williams post game interview– Sam

    On Ellington’s technical foul:
“Wayne will be in better condition after the running that he gets to do with everyone clapping for him later in the week. I saw it clearly, and Wayne did start talking to the player. I have no idea if he was saying anything bad, or congratulating him on his haircut. He was talking and there was a bump, and I have no problem with what the official did. I had no problem with Wayne missing the free throw because he said he

  21. Tar Heel Fan and Alum says:

Sort of a down game; I thought UNC was outplayed much of the game and the Heels were fortunate to win with some last-minute heroics by Hansbrough. Clemson will present their usual problems but if UNC plays their A game they should win and lock that #1 seed in the East (if they have not already done that). If they win Sunday there should be no doubt. Hope Lawson is on to break the Clemson press. Q got a lot of minutes today (and was solid) which shows how the depth developed during the injuries to Lawson and others earlier in the season will help during the NCAA back-to-back games.

  22. Adam in Chicago says:

Mr. Bowling, don’t ever say such things again. Carolina Basketball is a special gift from God. Winning IS what matters. You don’t want to be one of those guys who just watches the game as an excuse to have a cold one. Those guys suck.
