NCAA Tournament: 1st Round Thursday

The greatest two days of the college basketball season.

There are sixteen games being played today at various sites around the country.  You can get a quick rundown of everything that is happening here.  The consensus game of the day will be #6 USC vs #11 Michael Beasley State(because apparently there is no one else on his team.)  The matchup between Beasley and O.J. Mayo will be fun and I will have to watch it on the laptop since Duke-Belmont will be carried on the local station in Raleigh.

Games of interest for the Tar Heels fans are #4 Washington State vs #13 Winthrop(7:20 PM) and #5 Notre Dame #12 George Mason(9:50 PM) since any of those four could be waiting for UNC in Charlotte should the Heels advance that far.  As always there will be some surprises which is what makes this event so much fun.

Consider this an open thread for commenting on today’s action.  Also note that the Tar Heels will be having an open practice today at 4:25 PM over at the RBC Center.  It is my understanding Roy actually intends to practice in Chapel Hill and then bring the team over for some fun shooting around and dunking for the fans.  If my day works out I might head over there.

  1. Josh Bowling says:

USC will be tough THF. Last year they had the mustard, this year they have the mayo too!

  2. jackiemanuel says:

No digital cable, THF? I have directv but bought the madness anyways.

  3. Tar Heel Fan says:

No digital cable….now let me go and wallow in my misery.

  4. Chris Tutino says:

I’m # 41,608 in the MMOD line. Think I’ll get in by first tip if they’re letting someone in every 30 seconds?!

  5. Will says:

If UNC makes the Final Four, is anybody going to San Antonio?

  6. Joe in Toronto says:

Well put Josh…I love watching my DVD of that USC game last year when Marcus brought us back with his hustle!!!!…USC can be scary good and scary bad.

  7. william says:

Here we go! Four days of basketball with every single game available in HD via DirecTv. It just doesn’t get any better than this!

  8. Josh Bowling says:

I appreciate the notice Joe in Toronto! I am surprised that USC didn’t have a better season than they did. I would have thought of them as being a top 10-15 team going into the season late in ’07. It should be a fun mathup to watch. If we should advance to the final 4, we would most likely see Kansas. Would anyone here rather meet Memphis/ UCLA instead?

  9. Josh Bowling says:

Man, wouldn’t it be nice for UNC basketball to see Kentucky/Kansas lose today!! I’m tired of those teams hovering around our records. Let this be the year we start getting a good degree of separation from them.

  10. william says:

Portland State is hanging in so far. Hey, anybody with Directv HD, is there any way to set it so that it will scroll through only the four channels that are in HD?

  11. Josh Bowling says:

I just beat you to the post William in 1.2 seconds!

  12. Josh Bowling says:

I am sure DUKE is loving watching Xavier get beat!!

  13. Josh Bowling says:

Well Kansas seems to already be separating themselves. Bummer! Georgia may hang with Xavier for a while!

  14. jackiemanuel says:

Welcome to come over, THF! Plenty of Schlitz in the fridge!

  15. william says:

Well, that was a crummy start to the tournament. Hopefully, this is not going to be like last year, where there was only one (really good) upset in the first couple of days.

  16. Tar Heel Fan says:

The Xavier-GA game really petered out in the end.

  17. Jonathan Starsmore says:

There just don’t seem to be many good teams (never mind good games) out there today. UK-Marquette puts you to sleep, and Kent State are both comically incompetent teams — Chaplin-esque, if I might borrow an adjective originally applied to Javi Gonzalez.

  18. Jonathan Starsmore says:

Kent State and UNLV, I meant to say.

  19. Tar Heel Fan says:

Wow…I thought too highly of Kent State after they played UNC this season. Down 29-10 in the first half.

  20. Jonathan Starsmore says:

Kent State had something like 8 turnovers in their first 13 possessions. And actually looked worse than that stat suggests, something which should not be possible.

  21. Tar Heel Fan says:

Yeah, unless something changes there I imagine that will be my first missed pick of the day.

  22. Tar Heel Fan says:

Actually make that two misses. Purdue has jumped all over Baylor.

  23. Jonathan Starsmore says:

Bob Wenzel during the Baylor-Purdue game: “it’s like going to the dentist, playing Wisconsin.” It’s like going to the dentist watching Wisconsin too, Bob.

  24. Jonathan Starsmore says:

Norm Roberts: “Pittsburgh is a fungus.”

  25. william says:

Honestly, Tar Heel Fan, Kent State didn’t do all that well against us, 90-61, but I guess I thought they had improved and UNLV wasn’t as good as we were. I think they have deer in the headlights syndrome….

  26. Jonathan Starsmore says:

From watching about 8 minutes of the Kent St-UNLV game, I think what Kent has is more “ballhandling? What’s that?” syndrome…

  27. william says:

These games all bite. I want my money back.

  28. Jonathan Starsmore says:

Baylor is nothing more than a glorified version of VMI. Frenetic pace, no D.

  29. Tar Heel Fan says:

Wow…these games really suck today. And some people want this expanded to 128?

  30. Santiago says:

    Agreed, THF.

Except for active coaches (who live on “the bubble”) I think “The General” is the only person advocating a seventh round. Let’s call that Exhibit A that the elevator doesn’t go to the penthouse anymore.

Look people, there’s this little tourney called the NIT, and if you can’t get into that, there’s the CBI. If you don’t get invited to either of those, your shame should keep you out of the public eye until November.

Also, can we please dispose of the 64 vs. 65 play-in game. I can’t imagine Coppin State *really* feels like they played in the NCAAs. Please get rid of the automatic bid, or better yet one more bubble team, and give us a 64-team field again.

  31. Santiago says:

If they were to add a seventh round, it would just turn into something like ACCT Thursday. Except that it’ll be even less competitive and have fewer, if any upsets (e.g, if a #16 has never beaten a #1 in a 64-team tourney, what makes any reasonable person think a #32 has a snowball’s chance?). In other words, it ‘d be a huge waste of time. Oh yeah, but it would make more TV revenue. What was I thinking?

  32. william says:

The conference tournaments are enough of a second chance. Why should Maryland get another chance after that.

  33. 52BigGameJames says:

    don’t look now but Belmont’s hangin w/Duke.

  34. Tar Heel alum and fan says:

Obama has picked UNC to win it all – a smart politician! Of course there is that upcoming primary…

  35. 52BigGameJames says:

so did McCain so it’s a wash. Barack was down here yesterday and played some pick-up hoops at our local fitness center. Apparently one of his staffers was on the Laettner Duke team….not sure who it is.

  36. william says:

What game are you folks down in North Carolina getting? DC is getting the Duke game, but I would guess that Charlotte is getting the Winthrop game. I am going back and forth, as they are both pretty good games.

  37. 52BigGameJames says:

I’m getting X-box live at the moment as my son has a bud over to spend the night. Duke was on when I held sway.

  38. TxTarheel says:

Reggie Love is the staffer on Obama’s campaign

  39. Tar Heel Fan says:

Obama was interviewed on 850 this morning which was quite the coup for Adam Gold and it was an all sports discussion and Obama knows his basketball. He discussed some of the matchups in depth and said he was choosing UNC because of Hansbrough.

Reggie Love was on the 2001 title team for Duke but his greater claim to fame(infamy?) was being photographed at a frat party in Chapel Hill passed out drunk on a couch as the frat boys painted his face with lipstick.

Here is the interview if anyone cares to listen to it,

  40. william says:

Maryland is leading Syracuse 54-53 on ESPNU with 13 minutes to play, at Syracuse.

  41. TxTarheel says:

former UNC opponent BYU staged a nice comeback vs Tx A&M to knot the game at 29-29 at halftime. A&M was up 20-10 at one point.

    3-point bombfest

  42. william says:

Wasn’t Reggie Love the kid who used to like to party in Chapel Hill?

  43. william says:

I am surprised Reggie isn’t playing in Europe or the NFL.

  44. william says:

We need to take up a collect for James to buy a second television, lol….

  45. 52BigGameJames says:

are you kiddin me? allotment is the only way we get homework done now!

  46. TxTarheel says:

A quick google search returns a link to truthaboutduke.com, whereby you may find Reggie Love pics posted of said party referenced by THF.

  47. Tar Heel Fan says:

I have two TVs. If I could get one of them to be an HD set with digital cable then I would be happier.

  48. Tar Heel Fan says:

    Holy crap, Belmont is ahead.

  49. Tar Heel Fan says:

And Demarcus Nelson has been awful in this game.

  50. Tar Heel Fan says:

Wow…with three mins left, Winthrop has only scored five points in the 2nd half.

  51. 52BigGameJames says:

gotta feel for Belmont–they had this one.

  52. william says:

THF, unless you live in the boondocks, you don’t need cable for HD.

  53. TxTarheel says:

wow, that was close…a little better execution

  54. TxTarheel says:

A&M up by 6 with 17 secs left…would appear to be wrapped up

  55. william says:

I wanted Belmont but it would have made the ACC look like crud. Belmont played them straight up. Duke was very lucky to escape. So much for Duke having such an easy road as all the “experts” have been claiming. All of Carolina’s other top 50 wins are going out of the tournament, so for once, a Duke victory is not a total negative.

  56. Tar Heel Fan says:

I really thought Duke was going down there. Belmont’s coach did a heck of a job getting his guys ready to play and game planning Duke on both ends.

Duke is worn out. In previous years the complaint was K did not use his bench and wore his starters out. This season he used his bench and his players are still tired in March.

  57. william says:

Aarrgh! There are no games on right now! Why the big gap in start times!

  58. william says:

Duke keeps stalling at inopportune times when they should be hitting the accelerator, like against us with 5 to play and tonight as well. Maybe, he is working his kids too hard.

  59. william says:

I assume you guys are getting my second alma mater as well right now. Go Patriots!

  60. Tar Heel Fan says:

The stall game during the game in Cameron was because Duke was tired. You are right, they should have been attacking UNC then with the momentum and the crowd, instead they went slow down to rest the players.

If I had to guess I would say that the practices are too intense or he does not permit enough off days.

  61. william says:

Yes, effectively it meant we only had to defend them for ten seconds or so during that brief period where they were even or ahead.

  62. william says:

What kind of officiating is this? Notre Dame is getting every call! St. Patrick’s day is over, isn’t it?

  63. TxTarheel says:

if your Irish isn’t every day a good reason to drink ?

  64. william says:

My mother’s family is Irish, hiccup….

  65. william says:

Well, the officiating in the Notre Dame and Wisconsin games is making me nervous. They are not calling anything underneath in either game, which surely is not a good trend for UNC. Hopefully, this is just a blip….

  66. TxTarheel says:

Duke will face West Virginia 2nd round….should be a very interesting matchup

  67. Josh Bowling says:

I do want to argue the point that just because a team plays you hard doesn’t mean you are without being located in an easy bracket. Indiana, Louisville could fold against us but doesn’t mean they are not difficult teams. Right on Santiago. I couldn’t have said it better.
