This should be quick and quite painless….at least for UNC anyway. Comment away and I will drop my thoughts if I have any.
GO HEELS!
7:21 PM: UNC 17 MSM 12. I thought to begin with the Heels were going to just blow them slam out. MSM settled down and UNC has had a couple of defensive lapses during the early part of the game. UNC should reel off a huge run here at some point.
7:26 PM: UNC 20 MSM 12. Something tells me Roy ripped into the team about their defense. No points in the last two minutes and complete control of the boards. Green’s three just did not stay down but nice work on the offensive boards by Stepheson.
7:40 PM: Heels up 12 but I am think Roy is not too happy with the defense, especially permitting a layup off a made basket with the foul. Still UNC is up and will eventually pull away.
7:49 PM: UNC 48 MSM 33, MSM shooting 53%. That is not going to cut it. If UNC was defending better this would be a 25 point lead considering the Heels own the boards 20-5.
7:59 PM: UNC 60 MSM 41. Halftime. That was…well….very interesting. The offense is cooking and that apart from any real turnovers from MSM or that many missed shots. The defense can be described with two words: It sucked. Well it seems to have sucked though MSM hit some contested shots so I am not sure. I think Roy will be plenty pissed enough that I would not be surprised to see Blue-White at some point.
8:22 PM: Another quick 2nd half start. 6-0 run forces an MSM timeout.
8:34 PM: Heels up by a bunch. Stat of the game so far. UNC has five players in double figures with Green having zero points, Ginyard with three and Graves with two.
8:39 PM: Heels by 34. Just a complete decimation at this point with some huge play from Deon Thompson and Alex Stepheson specifically. Oh and Lawson is back in a huge way. And Ellington is hitting. And Hansbrough is on. And the defense is playing much better.
8:48 PM: UNC up huge. Anyone notice the increase in MSM turnovers and the fact they have only scored 11 points in 13 minutes of the 2nd half?
8:57 pm: Roy empties the bench with 4:39 left.
8:58 PM: There is a real shame in the fact Greg Little has returned to the football team and is not here to jack up shots.
9:04 PM: Surry Wood with the alley oop dunk!
9:05 PM: Surry Wood is going to be giving Marcus Ginyard all sorts of grief.
9:07 PM: UNC 113 MSM 74.
had a friend who went to the practice yesterday. He noted that Tyler can bust 3’s at will. I don’t think Roy will pull it out yet, but at some point in this tourney I think we’ll see it. I’m looking for Q,Deon, Alex, Graves and Copeland to demonstrate they’re ready to contribute.
I want to see Alex and Deon have a good game. They played terribly during the ACC tourney, which left Danny taking the 4 spot, especially during the VT game, which is not where he’s most effective. I’m hoping for ~10 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 four blocks between the two. If those two play like they had been playing during Lawson’s absence, UNC’s unstoppable.
3-2 zone is probably the best defense you can run against the Heels. our D has been wholly unimpressive so far!
Deon appears ready!
dang-where is everybody tonight?
i have nothing to add aside from seeing the score updating on Sportsline…regional coverage here on Okla/St Joes.
I’m gonna blow a gasket if I see Marcus leave one more off the rim.
how’s that one progressing?
TX….can you do MMOD at ncaasports.com?
fairly tight game, about 20 apiece; Raftery just dropped “Longar-Longar” and “alacrity” into the same sentence. I just wonder how Verne & Raftery will hold up into game 2
I made a feeble attempt & deferred on messing w/ downloads…having the Imac has a downside and this would be it
you’re right THF–our defense is atrocious!
They’re hitting contested shots. Stephenson’s spot on tonight.
Wayne Drops!!
looking for the clamp-down this last 3 mins.
Green is being lazy on the perimeter.
break-downs all over–I would be expecting an azz-chewing at halftime.
anyone know if this is the biggest offensive output of the season?
at PENN they put up 50 and 56 in each half, respectively…60 in a half for college is pretty big. Heck even some NBA games is pretty big
61 versus SC State in the 1st half…I only checked the 100 point games though.
they look pretty good, anyone know what the ncaa tournament record is for 1st half points??
This reminds me of the last time we played a Mary Mount in the NCAA tournament, back in the late 1980’s and it was a very similar game, although that team was more highly rated nationally. I think Ranzino Smith hit like 30 in that game against Hank Gathers et. al.
For the record. UNC lead Oakland 59-33 at half in 2005 and won 96-68.
How would you like to be the Hansbrough parents? Both sons are playing at the same time, although Ben is playing much closer to home, out in Little Rock. Maybe they will go to Ben’s game, since this might be his only tournament appearance this year.
Loyala Marymount. 1988, UNC 123 LM 97 in the 2nd round.
If your not able to see the game due to regional coverage go to ESPN.com and watch the game there
that LM game was Dean”s “rope-a-dope” game.
Larry Holmes showed you a dope on a rope….
even MJ didn’t know when it was time to quit!
Two men say they’re Jesus, one of them must be wrong….
If Foreman had fought Ali somewhere normal and used Holmes’ strategy, Ali might be in a worse state today yet….
in those two cases that’s about as close as anybody gets, lol.
I’m not so sure–next time you see it, watch the early rounds closely. Ali actually wasn’t that much smaller than George either.
Jimmy Young actually beat both Foreman and Ali, but got robbed of the decision against Ali.
can somebody tell me about Ginyard????
What the heck Marcus?
I hope Roy adresses this at the pg pc.
Ali was out on his feet in the 4th but Foreman’s legs were screwy the whole fight. This is a guy who could take a punch better than anyone except Ali. No wonder he thought someone had subtly drugged him, plus watch the count at the end–the ref stops the fight even though Foreman was up at 9….
Wayne is one helluva passer!
DC was not very faithful to local team MSM’s. They switched away after ten minutes. That is why I pony up for the Directv package.
Does anyone remember the Rhode Island game in 1993? They were a 9 seed and Carolina jumped all over them and won by like 45….
Ty hit a 3!
I have to disagree-I actually think Ali could’ve/should’ve put him away early. The only way GF would have won had that happened is if he tagged him with a lucky shot–which would’ve been possible.
didn’t Rodl have a big night in that RI game william?
What are you talking about? Foreman was pounding Ali’s body all through the fight. The fight was basically even until Foreman’s flash knock down where he twirled to the canvas. Ali never hit him with a single haymaker. Maybe it was another micro punch…. Frazier certainly beat Ali to a pulp. I still can’t believe Ali got up in round 15 after he walked right into a haymaker by Frazier–Shavers pummelled Ali–Lyle battered him and Norton busted his jaw. I am too young to have ever seen the great Ali–I just saw the guy who got knocked around and was no better than a handful of other admittedly excellent pugs, like Young, Lyle, Frazier, Foreman and Holmes….
All I remember is that my buddy who is a UMass fan, told me that we better watch out because “Rhode Island is really good.” I guess after that all the games were tough in 1993 in the tourney.
Do the Tar Heels have a major connection to Jesus?
The A-14 is about to be eliminated from the tourney. Terrible year for the Atlantic 14
do you have to ask?
Wow, Memphis State beat Siena by 44, 102-58, earlier in the year.
Siena beat Stanford which is why I picked them to beat overseeded Vandy.
What about Buddha? He would have been a major presence in the paint….
Copeland!
JMU beat Siena. What does that say?
Anybody remember Santa Clara?
I am sure Pomeroy will say that even though Carolina won by 50, that our defense was lousy….
I am just saying Siena showed they could beat a higher ranked team and Vandy looked fairly ripe.
QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ!
It was a good pick. I am just saying that you can do those crazy things where like last year VPI beat UNC and UNC was rated one and yet, VPI had lost to the second worst team in the country in the Pomeroy rankings.
our D has been lousy.
Were we supposed to win by a 100?
we were supposed to be tuning up the defense according to Roy.
I think the Lopez twins were upset about Michael jackson’s foreclosure when they played Siena….
yeah, but how do you tune it against guys who can’t even hang with you….
I predict we drop at least 100 on MSM’s….
Stepheson is tuning up his game, James, at the right time!
point taken, but just thought they’d do a little better in the first half.
Alex hits 2 free throws!
Hey, I should be doing the commentary. They are talking about the Rhode Island game.
let’s go Campbell!
Maybe we can get to 113. They must have left this game nationally because I no longer have any audio feed.
Campbell just go a foul. You’re blowing it, kid!
Surrey with a fringe!
What game are you guys getting in NC? Arkansas has a crazy mountain man on its team who reminds me of my freshman roommate back in Graham….
looks like he wandered in from a Grateful Dead concert…perhaps he is channeling a post-Bill Walton 32 years later
We have Indy-Ark right now but I think we will be switching to Clemson-Nova when it starts
anyone know what conference these officials might be from (at the RBC Center specifically) ? this has the early looks of a Big-10 game (brickmasonry 101)
I did not see who they were when it started, now I am watching Clemson and they look good right now. A 4-0 start for the allegedly weak ACC would be great.
agreed THF–I hope some of those Jayhawk fans get a taste of Clemson.
Who is the best team to be eliminated so far? I would say USC, then UConn and Gonzaga.
Yeah, but I expect no more than 2 to be alive from the ACC after Sunday.
I think everybody is writing Duke off a little early.
Indiana did not lose to a single non-NCAA tourney team until March 9th, when they lost to Penn State. They then lost to Minnesota, an NIT team and seem to be trending downward and much weaker than their 25-7 record.
West Virginia is really good and has a coach who emphasizes defense, unlike in the past. I notice that Pomeroy’s system finally dropped Duke from its virtual tie with Carolina down several places after their dubious win against Belmont (not Abbey).
Now Indiana has lost a starter to injury, but not White or Gordon.
is that the game you’re getting?
I get them all on DirecTv, but our local game is Clemson. Monster dunk by Arkansas.
Indiana is getting into foul trouble. Arkansas is ten of ten from the line.
dayum–#2 is a big boy for IU! looks like he likes the biscuits!
dayum–#2 is a big boy for IU! looks like he likes the biscuits!
I don’t see a number two out there. Ark by 10!
We had Clemson but they switched us to IU-ARK. I see Clemson is running Nova though.
Once they switch, they have to lift the block out on DirecTv.
Yep, our’s switched too, now I am getting the unblocked raw feed of the Clemson-Villanova.
So who would you rather face: IU or ARK?
Whoa, I heard that John Pelphrey can be fairly profane but just now he looks like the second coming of K.
I believe that a team should always want to play the lower seed. This is because teams can generally play up a couple of levels, but only so far. This what accounts for the VPI losing to number 336 but beating Carolina phenomenon.
Talent-wise, Indiana could probably beat Carolina if everything went right for Indiana. I am not sure that is true for Arkansas.
In general, I am not impressed with any of the SEC teams.
#2 went to the bench for a hot dog & fries.
Boise is getting back into the game.
Was it Jim Chones?
Carolina had both him and Tom Owens and both had good stats.
read the link–McDaniels!
I still have my Carolina Cougars progam with a signature by Billy Cunningham that I forged to impress my friends. Strangely enough, Cunningham only used his first name for his signature….
i’d prefer Arkansas…with a win IU could recover a whiff of what they had been prior to “Verizon-gate” when they were a top-15 team and become a little inspired by their interim-coach’s exploits vs UNC
Jim McDaniels, the former Hilltopper? I never saw a link–it must have come after i had left. Chones, McDaniels and Owens, plus Cunningham, Mack Calvin and Joe Caldwell, What a great team they were.
McDaniels must have gotten hurt after he left Carolina because he never did anything in the NBA. Jim Chones’ son was playing in the Patriot League tourney final last week.
Pogo-Joe! George Lehman was maybe the best shooter I ever saw in person.
Exactly, TxTarHeel. Unless Arkansas is a young team and trending up and i must confess I don’t know a lot about them, you would always rather face the less talented team.
Was he one of the Lehman brothers?
what I meant, was when they signed him, it really appeared to make them a legit contender w/Indiana & Kentucky. Cougs had good teams, but were always second tier. JM at the time was thought to be the missing piece, but not to be as we saw.
Pistol Pete made a terrible decision in turning down Carolina. That is why we got Caldwell, although his knees were beginning to go.
In 1972-73, we finished ahead of Kentucky but then they upset us 4-3 in the semi-finals. I think we won 58 games in the regular season. I am still upset about that. I was probably a bigger Cougars fan than UNC fan then, since the Cougars played 40% of their home games in Charlotte and I got to go a couple of times.
did you ever see the HBO special on the ABA?
http://www.remembertheaba.com/ABAGeneralInfo/ABAonHBO.html
good stuff!
http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/CAR/1973.html
I had forgotten that Wuycik and Previs were on that team.
I just remember what a thorn in the Cougars side was Louie Dampier.
Unlike the AFL which actually did not catch up to the NFL until about five years ago–check and see who has won many of the AFC Super Bowls, old NFL teams like Baltimore and Pittsburgh– the ABA was actually on the same level as the NBA and the ABA teams routinely won exhibition games between NBA and ABA teams.
ahem–Kansas City Chiefs/Miami Dolphins?
Larry Miller, too and he was pretty good, better than I remembered. He quit basketball to pursue an acting career–that shows how low the salaries were back then–Rusty Clark probably made a good financial decision to become an M.D., instead of playing pro.
I’m going to get a copy of the 68 OSU Carolina semi–I’ll send you a copy if you want.
I said many, not all. They had a few teams at the top, but look who won most of their Super Bowls in the 70’s–the Colts and Steelers. The Colts won the Super Bowl the year they switched. Miami was Baltimore South and had many old NFL guys like Shula, Fleming, and their quarterback in 1972 was the Colts’ starter in 1968.
Is it out? I went thru that link you sent me but most of them were just to get on the list for when CBS gets around to making the DVD’s….
I went with a Raleigh Dolphins fan club chapter to a Ravens game in the early nineties–last year they played in Memorial Stadium. A pure dump, but man you could just feel the history of the Colts and the Orioles as you were driving up the hill. I could just imagine Unitas or Matte giving a speech to some local Boy-Scout or Church group. Glad I had that experience–a lost era for sure.
I have seen the UNC-UVA and UNC-Kentucky games from 1982 this week on MASN, but they weren’t in HD so I didn’t make DVD’s. I have a good print of the second halves of the Duke game and the ACC final–I usually only do the 2nd half because that is all that fits of a HD recording on one DVD. If we make the finals I will do both halves.
DeAndre Thomas #2, heading back to the bench for a shake.
I still have my Earl Morrall autographed football–MVP in both leagues and led his two teams in 1968 and 1972 to regular season records of 27-1.
Gordon may have saved the game with a big block….
Memphis is burning it up, not!
UNC/UCLA have been the statement makers so far.
Derek Rose is a lottery pick this summer…scary good is this guy. doubtful UTA can muster a decent enough offensive response
Thomas is on the wrong team. He looks like that traditional big boy Nolan Richardson used to have on his teams. Remember the guy who chunked in the half court shot at the halftime buzzer in the 1995 Final Four?
“UNC/UCLA have been the statement makers so far.”
On different ends of the floor
Corliss Williamson?
CW was more cut than this guy. I’m thinking more like Big Baby? from LSU? or maybe a heftier Oliver Miller.
he must be pretty decent, if even for a couple of minutes.
Well, we are getting to the nitty gritty and it takes a lot of concentration to watch four games at once….
true THF–you share the same concern.
Ruh-roh Clemson
Well, only Clemson could blow a situation like this, with a 13 seed waiting on Sunday. It does concern me a bit that our two big rivals have looked so bad in the tourney. Maybe they left it all in Charlotte. That is why doesn’t try to win the ACC tourney very hard.
I think Oglesby has watched tapes of Greg Paulus or John Scheyer to learn how to draw that foul on the three point shot like he was called for in Cameron earlier this season.
Dumb foul by Nova
Wow…Wright just got a technical…HUGE mistake by the coach.
Technical on Jay Wright. How dumb is that? Even dumber than Ellington’s….
Must be a Philly thing.
Memphis by 20 with 4 minutes left….yes please switch my regional coverage back to this non-compelling end of a game
True. Will Nova give the game back?
That is why I purchase the package–I want Carolina regardless of the score!
Clemson is so stupid! Now Mays fouls out.
They are going to have to try to win this in regulation with their two best players fouled out.
Wow…Clemson is doing their best to lose the game.
Oh no! Barney threw it out of bounds!
Barney misses a drive!
Refs missed the out of bounds call there.
NC State beat Villanova, sort of, anyway….
I thought they got it right.
Now that call was wrong!
They took Barney out.
Clemson is its own worst enemy. Talk about snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
Barney is back in.
Oh well, so much for 4 ACC teams in the final 32.
No Tim Brando…It’s over.
Oglesby is ice cold.
And the three losers to NCSU in the NCAAT are about to be 3-0.
yeah …..CBS switched ! i shouldbe so lucky to miss the last 1:30 of this game which seemed to be a compelling end. suffering at my own expense
Boy, it must be tough being a Clemson fan. Clemson and Wake Forest (more so in the NCAA tourney) just torture their fans….
You didn’t miss much TXTarHeel. Clemson just bonked shot after shot and fouled a bunch.
Only Clemson could blow an 18 point lead against such a mediocre team….
Nice no call on the foul on Barney….
Go Siena!
I think calling him Opie would be more appropriate than Barney
taking orders for my new bumper-sticker: “Marcus can’t dunk”…get em quick!
He said in his postgame interview with 850 that the ribbing now was nothing. When he got back to the hotel and turned on his cell phone the text messages would be brutal.
I’m serious: I am beginning to believe he’s got something similar to a “free-throw” mental block thingy going on. He may be having problems with that foot pushing off, but even when he’s cleared everybody, he just refuses to finish appropriately. I wish one of these hacks would pin Roy down on this-right about now would be a good time to ask.
