Roy: Green Not Probing; Big Three Still Undecided

Meanwhile the draft gets deeper and deeper pushing all three to the very back of the 1st round if not the second.

From ACC Now:

North Carolina coach Roy Williams said today that Tyler Hansbrough, Wayne Ellington and Ty Lawson have still not made final decisions about this year’s NBA Draft.

“We’re not finished, and we’ll definitely have something before Sunday … I met with a couple of them today and we’re still going through the process,” Williams said before a Tar Heel Tour stop in Cary.

He said the process has been harder than previous ones because “instead of talking to 10 teams about Brandan Wright, you’re talking to 10 teams about three different players. So, it’s been by far, the most exhaustive research — there’s no question about that.”

Contrary to Internet reports, Williams said that junior Danny Green has not been part of the process. Underclassmen must declare for the draft by midnight Sunday.

So Green is not thinking about jumping as previously reported by DraftExpress so we can put that one to rest.  As for the Big Three, I agree with something Carolina Girl said earlier: Tyler has earned the right to do whatever he wants.  That is not to say Lawson and Ellington do not have the right to declare for the draft if they choose but based on the information I have seen in published reports and the deep, deep list of names in this draft I am not sure why either one of them would even be thinking about it.  It is crystal clear that Ellington and Lawson are borderline 1st round picks which is the difference between knowing for sure you get paid and risking that you will not.  Coming back and entering a weaker draft next season has a more promising look to it for both.

My sense then is the two guard are probably staying. This leads me to conclude, based Gene Hansbrough’s assertion that his son is still undecided, that they are waiting his decision and make the annoucement all at once instead of doing it piecemeal.  If one or two of them make their intentions known now it hangs the other(s) out to dry and pressures them unecessarily.

Roy said something about Sunday[Edit: He actually said “before Sunday” as pointed out by an astute reader] but I cannot honestly believe this will get to Sunday before we hear something concrete.[Which is still correct.] The hot message board rumor at present is a Friday announcement with two staying and one declaring without an agent.

The wait continues…

I’m liking this scenerio. I REALLY like this scenerio. In fact, I’m hopping into the back of a Chevy with this scenerio.

The best thing that could happen would be that Tyler gets some experience at the workouts, picks up a few pointers on what to improve on (we all know by now…a three-point shot and blah, blah, blah) and comes back to join a team that would be so insanely loaded that…okay, none of this.

Now for the dreaded waiting game.

  2. Larry P says:

THF, I believe Roy said “we’ll definitely have something before Sunday …”
… which could mean Thursday or Friday, perhaps.

I heard this evening that Augustin from Texas had declared as well as one of the Kansas players. With such a deep draft it would seem reasonable to wait another year when the draft will likely be more favorable.
I really like DeanForever’s scenario, except I’m opting for the back of a ’64-and-a-half Mustang (Carolina blue, natch).

  3. Five more declared today, I believe. Looking good for us. DeanForever, you are probably right on target with your assumption.

I’m trying not to get too excited.

  4. Nothin Could be Finer says:

You have to figure the consensus national player of the year will be at best a first-rounder. Lawson and Ellington have wonderful skills but would benefit from another year in UNC’s system. I do wonder a bit about Lawson; the ankle injury could make him nervous about another year of college ball.

  5. It was Chalmers from Kansas who declared today. I’m waiting official word before getting too excited or concerned about next year. I think Hansbrough should come back and prove he’s worth a top 5-15 pick. As competitive as he is, I don’t think he wants to settle for less either.

  6. wcb22 says:

    As far as timing goes:

“Let’s put it this way … on Saturday, I was supposed to go on a recruiting trip,” Williams told the crowd. “I canceled the recruiting trip, I’m letting one of the other coaches go, just in case somebody needs some more input on Saturday, I’ll be available.”

    http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/college/unc/story/1048036.html

  7. C. Michael says:

I can just see it now… some crazed fan(s) will now try and blame Roy for not get the decision made sooner, thus causing to miss a recruiting trip, thus causing him to missing out on a recruit, and… gasp… ONLY signing 9 top-50 players over the next 3 years… 😉

  8. Just remind them of how he cancelled his family trip to Europe to go recruiting in order to appease the fans that thought he had turned traitor by sporting the Kansas sticker at the championship game.

And am I wrong but have all the starters for Memphis now declared?

  9. e22 says:

I don’t think any of them are NBA ready. Hansbrough needs to learn to pass the ball. The difference between Kevin Love (projected lottery pick) and Hansbrough is his court vision and passing. Lawson has to prove he can be a factor over a 40 game schedule much less a 82 game schedule. Ellington has to prove he has the ballhandling and guickness to get his shot off against taller two guards in the NBA. With his size and athletic ability, Danny Green is the only player we have close to NBA ready.

  10. Tar Heel Fan says:

Yes. Dorsey was a senior though but the other four, all underclassmen, have declared.

All I can say is losing your top seven players is much easier to handle when you just won the title versus falling 10 seconds short of it like Memphis did.

  11. Wadsworth says:

Anxious: You are correct that all 5 Memphis starters have declared althouth the last two have not hired agents and will likely come back as their present position is undrafted.

I also think we may be dismissing the Green rumor a little too quickly. Williams did not say that Green was coming back, he said that Green had not been part of the process. This fits disturbingly well with the “friction between Roy and Green’s father” theory. I hope I am just being pessimistic.

  12. Tar Heel Fan says:

    Wadsworth,

Possibly but that would mean Roy has not talked to Green or asked if he or his family have done anything on their own. There has been enough bad information floating about anything is possible but at this point I would think Roy would know if Green were considering or not because he would want to at least give him all the same information as the Big Three are getting.

  13. DeanForever says:

Oh, I know. Now we won’t be three-deep in the point guard department in 2011!!!! Imagine how Tom Crean would feel if he read this blog.

He would kill for a third of Roy’s ’08-’10 recruits right now. And he would need them more than any other coach, with the pressure he will be under to get Indiana back on top.

We are truly blessed to have THE best coach in all of college basketball. Not Pitino, not Izzo, not Ratzyzski, not Crean, no that other Williams, not Calhoun, not Boeheim…Roy Williams.

  14. DeanForever says:

Calrification: I was responding directly to C.Michael’s post from earlier. I had some things to do, so there was about an hour lapse in time; thus, the continuity of this post has been interrupted (my bad).

  15. wcb22 says:

By the point we should all recognize that Roy does not play games in the media. Green is staying. The other 3 are still thinking about it, and may even be thinking about it into the weekend.

  16. […] that assessing the water is actually cheaper. Roy Williams says that Danny Green has not been a part of the process. This is either very good news or very bad news. I’m not sure why he would not be, unless he […]

  17. Brian says:

Just heard on the news that Baddour said in a teleconference that he expects Hansbrough to test the waters without an agent. Looks like WRAL has the inside scoop.

  18. DeanForever says:

Testing the waters has become my most adored and self-chastised phrase. It is adored only when applicable to one Andrew Tyler Hansbrough. I hate using it for any of the other 2/3 guys. Tyler is doing what he should be doing, and we are all at peace with that.

NOW-IF this information is accurate, then the implications are severely good. If Tyler has decided to merely test the…try out, then that probably means he knows something about the other guys (coming back). If Tyler was going to go pro, he probably would have declared sooner, to get his name in the mix, and then be talking about agents right now.

    But that’s not Tyler Hansbrough.

No effin’ way. Come on Psycho T, get out there and strut your stuff…

Then bring it all back home and let’s start talking UNC Basketball 2008-2009.

  19. Tar Heel Fan says:

    wcb22,

Correct. Baddour responded to a question about why we had not seen Hansbrough test the draft process by saying “You might.” That is why I did not post on it because there was really nothing new in the article.

I am seeing rumors with credibility on the IC boards that a PC is coming tomorrow.

  20. Brian says:

Sorry I didn’t read it fellas, I just went by what the anchor said on WRAL during the 12pm news. Take it up with them.

  21. Tar Heel Fan says:

Ratings! Both for WRAL and their weak sauce sports radio station.

  22. unc/uncwfan says:

THF could you post some links to the IC board rumors about the PC.

  23. Tar Heel Fan says:

They are on the premium side so you cannot see them even if I give the link. The rumor coming from one of the admins is there is talk in the program of a PC tomorrow but nothing official as of yet. It is basically common sense though. If they want a PC of any kind it must be on Friday since they cannot do it on the weekend. Now the general take on PCs is they are bad news. However some are speculating that because Roy indicated the Big Three would address their decisions regardless of what they were after the fact a PC could go either way.

  24. Josh Bowling says:

Do you think that these players decision to stay or go depend on how confident they are that Roy can help deliver a national title to them?

  25. Johnny says:

I’ve seen Roy’s jumper. He can’t help them there. They’re going to have to be confident in themselves.

  26. brandon says:

this isn’t good hey congrats to all of them, but to be sure with the final four and now this haven’t unc fans suffered enough

  27. Tar Heel Fan says:

Well logically speaking it stands to reason that if the main factor in their return is winning a national title and they perceive Roy was being unable to get them there then I am pretty sure they would go ahead and turn pro. By extension of that if they regard Roy at such a low level then they would probably declare anyway. That being said, I am not certain any of these three have “winning a national title” listed as their primary reason for returning(except perhaps Tyler) since it will be more about being rated so low versus a deep draft this season versus improving to a higher level to enter a weak draft next season.

  28. Dfrom Floirida says:

Are we coming up to “Cliffhanger Friday”? Please just let this end!

  29. brandon says:

i know that no word has been said yet, but ya think they could atleast say a press conference tonight is scheduled be fair i’ve been waiting two three weeks to hear this, i mean really? carolina fans have to start preparing themselves for 2009, its bad enough you have the duke fans ready to laugh in our face

  30. Tar Heel Fan says:

Why would Duke fans laugh? Frasor coming off rehab is still a better PG than Paulus, Green and Ginyard would still be around and the combo of Zeller, Davis, Stepheson and Thompson is far more inside game than Duke has.

  31. Wadsworth says:

Don’t forget Will he shoot it in the first 10 seconds of playing time Graves.

  32. brandon says:

well im just saying ya gotta forgive me right now, im a lil dissapointed, but hey who knows anything is possible right, the only reason i say about the duke situation already heard about the final four the past three weeks, how we embarrased the state of nc i mean what can you say, you weren’t there?, but i just don’t know i can believe ellington going right now, its crazy at first i was convinced it would be tyler, and wayne coming back lawson going, but only tommorrow will tell

  33. 52BigGameJames says:

so what does “embarrassing the State of NC” have to do with the Uof NJ @ Durham?

  34. Wadsworth please don’t remind me. The ides of Will Shoot-First–And-Ask-For-Permission-Later Graves in any kind of role other than a last-second shot option is scary to me. He’s like a special teams guy. Let him get his 2 minutes a game and then sit down please.

Brandon, did I miss something about Wayne? He’s proabably the last one to have the chance to declare. It must be Tyler, without agent, and then Ty and Wayne stick around.

  35. And just a reminder what Roy said last week about “testing the waters.” Looks like he and Dick Baddour need to get their speaking points in line.

“If we do it the right way, we’re going to get a lot of information, and I don’t really know that you can gain much more by, quote, ‘testing the waters,’ ” Williams said last week.

“So I feel pretty secure with what we’re doing. But that’s not to say that I wouldn’t ever have a player do that, but we haven’t felt that it was necessary so far.”

  36. G. Keith says:

I would find it VERY odd that a program like UNC would not announce a press conference a day ahead of time if it was going to have one, for the simple fact of alerting the media so they can make plans to be there. I could be dead wrong on this, but I think the fact that no PC was announced today could mean a press release is issued tomorrow instead of a press conference taking place. That press release might simply say the three players are returning. Based on what mock drafts look like right now, and the players who are available, I would think it would be some seriously bad advice for these players to declare now.

  37. G. Keith says:

… oh, and one more thought on a Friday press conference. That would be sorry timing by UNC. Friday is not a good day to announce news. It tends to go unrecognized by many people because they are busy doing other things on Friday night and Saturday morning (at the lake, going out of town, at the park, at the beach, etc.). If you, as a school, would want to help a player declaring get the most exposure, a Friday PC is plain silly. No one reads Saturday newspapers. Saturdays and Mondays are the two hardest days to sell advertising for newspapers because people just have other things to do than to read a paper on a Saturday. If any of these players are declaring and UNC has a PC on Friday, those players will get minimal exposure. The news will get lost in all the runup to NASCAR, golf, basketball playoffs, NFL draft news, and all the otehr weekend sports and sports news.

  38. MinnyTarHeelFan says:

I don’t think there will be a PC, but a release. There’s no reason to make the players available to the media to ask a bunch of silly questions, and the same goes for Roy. The school has nothing to gain from a PC. With that said, I don’t think UNC really cares if it’s on a Friday and Saturday’s papers don’t sell (which, BTW, doesn’t matter AT ALL anymore. Nobody gets their sports news from a paper anymore, except maybe high school scores). They’ll do what’s best for the players and the program, which is why UNC is what it is–a classy place, unlike the other place down the road, which does what’s most important for its head coach.

  39. DeanForever says:

    Breathe deep, the gathering gloom…

Nope. I’m not buying into a press conference to announce that TB3 will all announce their decisions to go pro. I know enough about how UNC handles press-related business and I can safely say that today’s news won’t be earth shattering. My guess is a press release confirming one of two scenerios: all three test the waters (which would stretch this thing out and into our summer schedules) with out agents or Tyler will put himself on display and the other two will stay.

I would be utterly shocked if, by four or five today, we are all scraping our jaws off of the ground after watching a press conference where all three are declaring themselves eligible WITH agents.

  40. Josh Bowling says:

Boys, please come back for not only Your sake, but OURS!! Didn’t that sound convincing?

  41. G. Keith says:

Told ya it’d be a press release.
